For those of you whom have had a steering rack in bits, what does the oil seal immediately behind the steering rack boots consist of? I'm working my way through potential oil leaks, and this one sticks out like a drag queen at an AC/DC concert. Both rack boots are torn, and it would appear that there's a slow leak from behind them. Anyone got any quick fixes?

I'm just getting it over the pits for now, then will finish off the rest of it properly, probably going full recon on the rack |

changing the boots will just make the fluid well up in them and then when they leak you will get a huge puddle, when i did the boots on the sis inlaws skyline (hate hate hate skylines btw) i used a bit of urethane after cleaning all the crud off the seal and 6 months later it hasnt leaked a drop. so that may be a goer. |

The last bloke to service my transmission (last Thursday) I asked him to check the steering rack for leaks, and if possible, isolate the culprit. He cleaned around the inlet and return pipe, and both are still bone dry. This leak is temperamental; it will only show its ugly face after about 48 hours of sitting idle. He suggest3ed I replace the rack boots (both torn) and see what happens. Once that's done, I'm calling in the detailers to clean every trace of dirt, grease or oil off the underside and the engine bay, then observe any leaks. Would do it myself, but have neither the time nor patience to do it myself |

mate i just read a repair manual and it says nothing about the oil seal immediately behind the steering rack boots consisting of anything ,is the fluid leaking from the streering gear fluid pipe unions ? |
