Posted - 31 Aug 2011 : 3:08:56 PM Hey guys, Ive been surfing the forums to figure out the problem with my VN but seem to be getting nowhere.
My VN hasnt got a flat battery, I tested it with a multi-meter and its fine it charges and holds charge. Ive tested the alternator and thats pushing out enough volts too.
But sometimes after going for a drive the car wont start, has all the typical signs of a flat battery......20 minutes later its fine again and starts. If I can be bothered waiting, I hook up a jump starter and it kicks over straight away.
At first I thought it was the starter motor, so I changed it with a brand new one but it hasnt helped.
Hoping someone else has gone through the same and/or can give me an idea on what my next move should be! |

Posted - 04 Sep 2011 : 7:43:34 PM I got it tested at Repco and sure enough the battery was gone. As you guys said, it had a dead cell so my multi-meter was none the wiser.
I didnt get the chance to test the load while cranking but ill be sure to remember that for the future....would of saved me a lot of time instead of all the stuffing around i did! |

Posted - 01 Sep 2011 : 8:36:37 PM Testing voltage while cranking will give you a good indication of a dropped cell. A charged battery underload (cranking) should not really drop below 10 volts 9.5 minimum. A battery with a dropped cell will go alot lower. Alternatively as Mechknight has mentioned take it to a battery shop or auto electrician and they should be able to let you know for sure. Cheers |

Posted - 01 Sep 2011 : 10:55:40 AM I guess your simplest way to check it would be to have a battery test done. A Multimeter will tell you how many volts a battery puts out, but can't test for "load" i.e. when it has to do things like turn a starter motor. Any battery specialist can give you a free test, and they can instantly tell you if your battery really is due to be cut up for lead scrap |

Posted - 01 Sep 2011 : 12:13:10 AM It tries to turn over but it acts like it just hasnt got the balls, but not dead silent either its basically what you expect from a low charged battery (dash lights fade when turning the key, sounds slow and lumpy etc.)
I was told by a mate today that the battery may have a dead cell which a multi-meter doesnt pick up apparently? |

Posted - 31 Aug 2011 : 8:40:43 PM Good point mate , Is the starter motor turning over and the motor's not firing or is there dead silence when you try and start. |

Posted - 31 Aug 2011 : 7:56:34 PM I was thinking similar dryVN except with the jump starter hooked up it fires straight away which would not happen if it were the CAS or a coil pack. Have you checked the voltage straight after you shut it down?? |

Posted - 31 Aug 2011 : 3:42:45 PM Hey Welcome to the site , The symptoms sound like an over heated CAS as i had this problem with mine.
It sounds like a sensor problem of sorts and could also maybe be a coil pack issue as that's a big area to fail when hot.
The Crank sensor is most likely though , Cheers |
