Posted - 27 Oct 2011 : 3:17:40 PM OK so my vn Calais has a dodgy fuel pump the mechanic said so he showed me how to get it going again by getting underneath it and banging it first time it started straight away then i couldn't start for ages banged it so much didn't wanna fire up.. left it for a few days and we banged the **** out of it and could hear like dirt breaking away and now it starts first time every time but sometimes if im at the lights it goes to die but i keep the revs up so it doesn't like trouble idling, but its just becoming a pain in the ass should i get a new fuel pump and filter i was reading someone else had the same problem but they changed the fuel pump and still didn't fix anything and was doing the same thing also the engine light i believe it is keeps coming on randomly iv checked everything and nothing is low. also can i damage the car by driving it with the fuel pump like that and keeping the revs up all the time?? thanks if u could help that would be so good |

Posted - 15 Jan 2012 : 11:32:06 AM pre september 89 vn v6 + vn v8 + vl v8 only cars with this prob.they got two pumps. primer pump wont switch off after tank takes knock. when your bogan mechanic tought he should "hit here with hammer" it changed geomatry of tank. by design the primer pump shuts off when it senses return of fuel. or maybe your exterior pump is crapped. and thats where they get that tale about hitting. 1 pump dies, make the other 1 do it. with me i had both pumps running. fuel pressure supposed to be 40-60 psi mine was over 3000 psi. thats why it could be dngerous at that pressure. if a pipe blew it could release alot of fuel very quickly. |

Posted - 15 Jan 2012 : 10:26:07 AM wont fix your ploblem sorry. get new mechanic. aldl wont know whats wrong it either. it will just read code.42 which only tells you its not reading rpm correct due to short, car will run in limp home mode, will fire directly from the distributor, thus bypassing ign module. spark will be at a constant 10°btc. but that should give you a smooth idle, at 14.7to1 youl get spark knock on anything but 98 octane. but yours aint knocking.your mix couldnt be out cause it would have given you aldl error45. puzzling isnt it. well it is when you look in the rear view and you see all that black smoke pouring out your exaust when go froma stop. not too bad at idle.not too bad when cruising. only realy when you acelerate quickly. all that smoke would have to tell you your mix is out. fluctuating eraticlly though thats why engine light stays on mostly. flicking off for 10 secs everyminute or so. just paid 300 dollars for immaculate cond. 175,000 kms. over the moon. what was the catch? the guy had it looked at by 5 mechanics, spent over a 1000 dollars on it. took me weeks of trial and error, research. i got to go, ill leave you in suspense for a while. tell you what i think is wrong with your car tonight

Posted - 28 Oct 2011 : 1:17:36 PM Although while you're at it, you might want to check your filter, and check inside the tank. The reason why the pump is dying may just be simple wear and old age, but it might also be some crap in the tank.If there is any shale or dirt in the tank, remove it for a long and healthy life for the new pump. If it still gives you trouble, you may also have a dodgy fuel pressure regualtor. |

Posted - 27 Oct 2011 : 5:50:50 PM if your pumps dodgy i dont see why u wouldnt change it. its inside the fuel tank but really not that hard to change. i was suprissed when it only took me 30 mins to change. my tank was fairly empty though at that time. its an easy job. as for the engine warning light have you done a diagnostic on it?? http://www.vncommodore.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=450 Id suggest saving this link n your favorites. ive needed it once so far and doubt itll be the only time haha |
