I've suffered from terrible fuel economy for ages now. I'm using half a tank to drive 100km or less. All fuel hoses have been replaced, injectors cleaned, O2 sensor replaced, spark plugs replaced, ECU reset, tank checked for leaks the whole works & I still can't find where the fuel is going. The best I can figure is that I have a vaccuum leak, mostly because I can't find a leak anywhere at all & because the fuel gauge goes down substantially under acceleration & rises substantially under braking. I can't smell fuel at all & I havn't found any wet areas (or dried up ones) indicating a fuel leak. The best I can figure is that this vaccuum leak is sending large amounts of fuel to the carbon canister up the front near the radiator & that the fuel is then flowing out the bottom of the canister straight onto the ground. That is the only thing I can think of that would account for me not smelling anything & for me finding no evidence of a leak. What I want to know is if I clamp off the line to the carbon canister does it pose any safety problems or can it cause any other issues? I've checked all of my hose connections & they are definitely good connections & everything is hooked up to the right places. I'm at my wits end with this thing so any suggestions of what I can do to fix this would be greatly appreciated because my next option is sell the damn thing & buy something else.

Thanks VNGRPA. I disconnected the canister last night, blocked the main line going to it & hooked those two vaccuum hoses together. I'll fill it up today & bugger off fishing (day off) :) I'll know when I get back if it's any better & will let you know.

Thanks Mechknight73. I've replaced all the vaccuum & fuel hoses just a couple of months ago. I did it one hose at a time & used colored tape to mark hoses & connections so everything went back in the right places. The O2 sensor was replaced at the same time with a brand new ACdelco unit. The fuel filter was replaced 1 month ago, the injectors cleaned & inspected about 2 months ago. The ECU was reset & spark plugs replaced at the same time as I did the O2 sensor. I'm pretty meticulous about my servicing so everything gets checked & replaced at the recommended intervals. It gives a little puff of smoke when you first start it but that's it. It doesn't smoke at all other than that, even when you give it a bootfull.

I'd go through all the vacuum hoses one by one, maybe even going to the trouble of removing each of them to check for leaks. Have someone rev the engine, and watch to see what comes out the exhaust. If the engine is running too rich, it will usually show as an excessive amount of black smoke from the exhaust. I once fitted a 350 Holley to my HQ Kingswood, not realising at the time that the jets on it were way too big for a 202 6 cylinder. Every time I revved it, there were thick black clouds of smoke. After changing the jets, it ran normally.

Another one that may add a little to your problem is the O2 sensor on the exhaust. Check its condition, and the condition of the cable going to it. The O2 sensor is only a "trim" input; it smooths out the engine at both idle and under load, adding to the fuel economy.

i hooked them up to my supercharger hahaha maybe you can run them into each other

Thanks VNGRPA. What did you do with the two hoses that go back to the throttle body? I assume they are vaccuum hoses.

mine broke on me so i disconnect it and blocked up the hose that goes to the fuel tank and it hasn't damaged my engine or caused any extra fuel usage, but when it was broken it did go through more fuel and spark plugs it would use about a 1/4 of a tank just driving around the block say 5km or less hope that helps you mate

Typical city driving & I take it easy for the most part. I'm not into flogging my car too much too often. I always fill the tank just to the first click & I never let it go under 1/4. My first instinct is that I have two seperate issues at play here. The first being the gauge which I think is most likely the sender unit. The gauge is accurate, it just goes down under acceleration & up under braking. At standstill or steady driving the gauge will settle & read right or very close to it. Yes I give the gauge a good tap to get it to read right. The gauge says full when the tanks full, 1/2 when it's actually got 1/2 tank (34lt to refill) & empty the one time I let it run right down to fumes (59lt back to full). The second issue is the huge amount of fuel the car is going through. I did find a very slow leak in the rubber hose between the fuel pump (external)outlet & the metal lines but it was only very slow even when the engine was running & revving at 3000rpm. There's no sign or smell of fuel in the oil. This thing has me stumped.

I'll read that link you gave me & see if it gives me any ideas. Thanks VNSVLE.

What driving conditions( ie town stop start, highway)??
Are you filling the tank or only half filling the tank??
The guage moving as you say it is makes me think the guage could be faulty.
I dont believe the canister will be your issue. Here is a little article on how the carbon canister works may help you out - http://www.ehow.com/how-does_5047404_carbon-canister-work.html
Cheers
