Hey guys,

i've been having some issues with my '91 s2 VN. it would intermitently stutter and lose power and sometimes even stall. would usually start again after a bit of cranking but the other morning it just would not go.

i've done alot of reading and talking to my mechanic friend and i'm still not entirely sure what the problem is. Battery and spark plugs are new, so i checked for spark on the coil and got nothing. on all 3. so my next thing down the list was the crank angle sensor. problem is i am on a budget and can't afford to replace anything that doesn't absolutly need it, so i don't just want to go replacing things.

i tried getting a fault code out of it, but all i got was error code 13, the O2 sensor.
would this cause the coils not to be getting any power?
is there a way to test specifically for the crank angle sensor?
anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong? besides, well, lots.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Excellent news that you found the problem buddy!!
Cheers

thanks, VNSVL. i reset the ecu and tried for a code and just got 12. so i un-earthed the test thing and tried to crank it for a few seconds. checked again for a code and got 41

pretty much just confirms what i thought, but still good to know it worked. sometime when i have a bit more time i'll go over all the wiring and make sure its not that. then i'll look at getting the CAS replaced.

thanks again!

CAS will throw a code so I dont think this is your problem unfortunately.
I have a VS statesman and have had a similar issue a little while ago. No spark and no code to explain it.
Ended up being a bad connection in the plug that goes onto the DFI module.
Maybe worth a shot.
Also give the ECU a reset like you are thinking and check the codes again. Dont think anything will change but quick and easy and worth a shot.

ok, thats good to know. its probably well worn out by now and should be replaced anyway then i guess. especially if i'm burning more fuel.

i checked for spark at the coil visually and got nothing on any of them, so its not just one pack thats gone. and its very unlikey for all 3 to fail at the same time, so the CAS was the next culprit.

is there anything else that would cause absolutly no spark to come through? besides some bad wiring? which i checked and it all 'seems' fine.

The O2 sensor is only used once the motor has started running(above 400rpm approx) and the O2 sensor has warmed up from the exhaust gases. If no changes in voltage are read by the computer it will signal a fault.

How have you proved you have no Spark??? with a timing light?? or visually looked at the spark plug gap while cranking?? Have you checked all cyclinders?

If you have spark then your crank angle sensor is working,

If you need an O2 sensor from repco is only around $60, they wear out after 75k kms -100k kms and should be changed, the O2 sensor reaction rate slows down so you technically burn more fuel. 98RON is not the cheapest fuel around but it stops pinging.

hey, thanks for the reply!

and no the car doesn't go at all at the moment. cranks fine thanks to a recently new battery, but thats as far as it gets. i only got the code after the car had stopped working. but i was thinking of disconnecting the battery to reset the ecu and see if i get a different code. not sure if that would acomplish anything?

Would the O2 Sensor cause a lack of spark on the coil?

is there a way to test specifically for the crank angle sensor?

Welcome to the club buddy!!

Now to test that O2 sensor -

With the ignition off, earth the diagnostic terminal ( the same thing you did to get the codes)
Disconnect the O2 sensor and earth the violet wire on the harness connector.
Start car 9If it will that is) and Hold RPM at 1600 - 1800 while watching the check engine light. It may flash open loop (code 13) for a few seconds,
but then should go out for at least 30 seconds.

One more thing when did you get the code 13 before it would not go or while it was playing up??
Run this test and post up your results buddy and we will go from there.

Cheers
