Posted - 21 Jan 2012 : 9:04:59 PM hi all. I have a vn commadore 5 ltr manual wich has been running fine for last 2 years. yesterday it stopped (along a busy road) :(
i got a tow home and have been working on it today.
i have checked and via gregory's manual every thing seems fine. i ahve checked for fault codes in ecu and get code 12 (all ok) i have checked the voltage from connector b5 and get .8 volt atno crank and get between 2-3 volts at crank. acording to gregory's all ok i have checked resistance of coil and get .7 ohm.. (unsure if this is corect. although its not short and its not open) messured thought the conenctor on the ignition module...
the voltage to coil is about 11.x volts non cranking voltage.
so im looking at needing to either get a new ecu or a new iginition modiule and or a new coil...
any one had experiance with no spark ? and any sugestions

Posted - 24 Jan 2012 : 12:01:41 AM Thanks for the coil resistances, it will help me or some else in the future. Yes I bought a electronic coil, during my search for the no-go in the motor, but its been the leaning over the motor, looking between bonnet and firewall, trying to figure out how best to twist your hand to get a spanner onto a gap not big enough to swing it, has left that job waiting. I'll change it one day when I have 2 hours to spare or the car stops again. |

Posted - 23 Jan 2012 : 2:20:03 PM well. here is an update....
i searched and searched and could not find the specs to check the coil on a vn v8 BTW it is 3 Ohmes across the primary and then 16KOhmes across the secondary to the positive( my old one was .7 ohms across the primary and 8K across secondary....
I personaly think that the coil going low could have been the reson the ignition module went...
anyway .. bought new one installed ( 2 hours off mashing nuckles between engine and firewall) and car still wouldnt run.
went and bought the ignition module $244 from repco and went in and hey presto... running fine now..
and king buck, thanks for the prompt reply.. it confirmed what i was thinking, thanks very much

Posted - 21 Jan 2012 : 11:21:52 PM Montyt I have had something similar.
I have had 3 show stoppers fuel pump EST ECU
Hopefully this will help you, from my notes when the motor is cranking the EST module controls the spark alone, not the ECU. If you have no spark I would narrow my search for the problem between coil and EST module.
The coil has two windings a primary between +ve and -ve on the coil which you have measured and the other secondary is from spark output to the -ve side of the coil this should have a higher resistance value. You should be able to measure it similar to how you measured the coil primary, a little bit harder due to the location of the coil. If you can measure two resistances next I would look at the EST, are you able to swap between another V8 vn-vr this will help you narrow down your problem.
I bought my EST module from Repco for $255 exchange. I have been told the EST do eventually fry themselves from the reverse voltage of the coil.
You have also proved that you hall effect sensor is working and the reason why your not getting Error codes on the ECU, The ECU is getting the expected reference signal when the motor is cranking.
Hope this helps a little.
