has anyone got any ideas why the gremlins are taking over the ship?

not a bad idea with gps ;) this one is manual an all wires and everything have been taken from berline or calais and stuck into this most of the loom is not put in the right ways but i assume all is connected and the 4th cluster is in through the main loom not soldered or twisted on 24 has not shown, and yes your right i got bigger prob there sumweres if i payed a bit of money i would have been ripped off but i got it for 550 5speed plus extras here and there they tried to "wogafy" it lol

If your VSS signal wasn't getting to the ECU you would have an error code 24 already, The VSS function in the ECU is to lock up the torque converter at speed greater than 70km/h with a certain MAP value and to control the IAC. From what you have said it appears the ECU has an input signal but your wiring to the speedo has a fault.

Have a look at the wiring for the instrument cluster, check the wiring for the 4th connector to the instrument cluster, I'm assuming it has been retro fitted and it finds its connections through stripping & joining wires together. These I hope have been soldered but possibly just twisted and taped.

But you have bigger problems at the moment, I would look into your Speedo problem later, use a GPS device to get road speed.

i have noticed the drop in idle speed once i stop and wen i take it out of gear sumtimes it will sit on 1g or a tad over it was ment to be exec however they changed everything in the harness an sounds like its the calais however is has only got the standard climate controls unsure how different they are cold start or not started for a while seems to be wen it wants to work but only sumtimes, it still shows tank level fuel used (assuming its on the tank side) trip oddo average fuel/speed work only wen the speedo wants to work

origionally thought it was the dash cluster. the one i pulled out is a

vdo 39488/293
with a number 7 circled underneath it has the lion/helmet sticker but im thinking the last owner stuck it there i bought a calais one off a mate and replaced it this is when i worked out that it was not the cluster

There was three different styles of dash you could have for a vn: exec, belina/calais & V8, and an optional calais dash. If I remember the exec didn't have a tacho, the belina had a tacho, and the calais had it all plus LCD at the bottom and this had the trip computer. The first two dashs could be interchanged, but the Calais required a 4th wiring cluster which was part of the standard wiring harness for calais, else you cut and soldered a 4 wiring cluster in.

If your speedo pickup is not working then you will also notice that the auto will not lock up the TCC above 70km/h and when you come to a stop the motor wont do a step change in idle once the car has stopped.
In my old work VN (manual), if I rolled in N the revs would pickup while the car was moving the return to normal once stopped again.

I have a feeling that some or all your problems you have with your car are starting to be related to one or two issues, The speedo sensor is also used by the ECU in relation to motor performance. I'll have a look at my notes when I get home on symptoms for VSS failure. Your Trip computer, motor, and speedo uses the VSS input.

Possibility of a dicky speed sensor or the wiring on the speed sensor.
Speed sensor is on the left hand side of the transmission if I remember correctly.
Cheers

i mean the 3 lot of wires? i originaly thought it was the cluster itself so i changed it an was still the same
Benche Posted - 20 May 2012 : 09:30:06 AM
could be loose wires behind the cluster
