Had to swap out my coolant this morning, started it reversed it back into the garage no problem. Did my thing with the coolant & went to start it again to finish filling it but all it did was click & then nothing. The dash lights were very dim so checked the battery which turned out to only have 11.60v. Put it on the charger for few hours, brought it back up to 12.80v but still nothing. I thought it might be the starter motor so I tried it a couple more times & different things started happening. First off I got a very strange clicking cross whining sound when the ignition was turned on, it's something to do with the interior fan as it goes away when I turn the fan on or off. Sometimes the dash lights light up properly & the fuel pump primes when I turn the ignition over. other times the dash lights stay dim, the fuel pump won't prime & there's only a faint click when I try to start it. Sometimes the door locks cycle when I turn the ignition off others times it doesn't. At one point the thermo fan switched on but nothing else would work. I don't know much about electrics but I figure it's a short. I have no idea where to start looking for a short though there's that many figgin wires hanging around under the engine bay. If anyone could point me in the right direction of where to start looking or offer an alternative cause for my problems I would very much appreciate it. |

Thanks guys, I've just wound up at the same conclusion after stealing a mates battery & trying it. The car didn't start because his battery is only 280cca compared to the 480cca I have to run but it did stop all the weird stuff going on & crank it over once. Just as well I'm a fishing nut & always making my own sinkers, recycling at it's best. |

Would have to agree. A healthy 12V car battery puts out between 12.5-14 volts when fully charged. A load tester will tell you if it has enough amps to turn the engine over, and from the sounds of it, probably not. Your multimeter will show 12V when the battery isn't under load, but it's harder to get an honest result from it under load. Take out your battery, and take to anywhere that sells batteries. Most have some form of load tester and/or battery analyser, and will test it for free. In the mean time, open the tops on the battery and have a look inside. If the lead plates are all warped and buckled, it's short of acid, or there's sludge between the plates, it usually means the battery is knackered, and is now only good for making sinkers to go fishing with |

Honestly I would be looking at the battery.
Almost sounds like battery has dropped a cell.
What voltage are you getting when you are trying to crank??
