yer its a good idea but its a little different for the motor i have its a ca18det and 1 min they can be good and then with out warning they can be stuffed thanks to the turbo the rebuild kits are cheap so i will just do it for peace of mind |

It should be easy enough to do a compression test on a V6 even if it is on an engine stand. All you need is power to the starter motor and some oil, just like any engine from a lawnmower to a CAT V8. Run a dry test, and compare it to what it should be, stock. Then squirt some oil down each pot. If there's a noticeable change in compression, it's rings. No change at all, and it's valves. Close to normal, and it's ok. |

well i called qld transport and they said they can check it out for me for $40 so i will prob do it that way,
i was thinking about doing a rebuild on it as its a turbo motor and most likely the piston rings would need to be replaced if it was a Holden v6 i wouldn't bother doing a rebuild as there cheap motors to get hold of,
was hoping someone knew a place online that did it for free |

Is it possible to do a compression test a motor in an engine stand?? hook the starter motor to a battery. Look for even pressures for all cylinders and compare it to a known V6.
The only other ways is dump it in a car and make it run. or re-build the motor then you know it going to work for a few years. |

i do remember hearing somewhere that u can ring some department of transport number that can look up what the engine had on it when it was last registed, however i am not sure what or even if it exists, still not gonna guarantee if the dash was changed.
have you tried the department of transport? they mite be able to get you onto someone
what about holden? |

yer mate were do i do that as every place i have looked at wants the vin number of the car that it came out of ,so how do i just look up the engine numbers |

im not sure you will be able to find out the amout of k's its done by just looking up the engine number. |

i would like to know what type of car it came out of and how many k's it has done,
coz if it has done heaps of k's while i have the engine on a engine stand i will do a quick rebuild saves pulling it out after i have wired it all up |

does anyone know how would you check just the engine numbers, everywhere i have looked you need to have the vin number to check the rev's as well but i don't have the vin number of the car the motor came out of |

I found a pretty good site in my frustrated net searchings last night.

Basically, sign up with a username and valid e-mail (just use a spam account, I did) and it will send you a password. Login and it will give you 50 free goes at decoding VIN numbers. After that 50, either pay, or sign up with another e-mail address. Gmail anyone?

l381352=Holden tag number
if you want to check it it will coast money |

The J is the model year code, and the one in the example is for 1988 model year.
1989 = K
1990 = L
1991 = M
Note the model year runs from sept 01 to Aug 31. So a 1991 model is anything built from 01-09-90 to 31-08-91.
This follows the yankee GM tradition.
