Posted - 21 May 2012 : 7:23:43 PM Is it possible to replace a vn s1 v6 engine with an s2 engine or vp without needing to change wiring ecu etc? I ask as the engine in my EH is dead and I need a cheap get me by engine and have seen more s2 engines. |

Posted - 24 May 2012 : 8:17:36 PM No worries the only issue you may have is bolt pattern on the crank. The series 1 auto had a 6 bolt pattern and the manual had an 8 bolt. I believe they went 8 bolt both auto and manual with the series 2. In saying that if the replacement engine comes with the Flywheel/flexplate you should not have a drama. |

Posted - 23 May 2012 : 7:14:41 PM Has the radiator got a cap or not?? If it does then you may have similar to the series 2 setup but if it does not have a cap and has what Mechnight73 has described then it is series 1 style setup. |

Posted - 23 May 2012 : 12:08:05 PM The surge tank is simple to spot Instead of a conventional radiator cap, it has a plastic "header tank" which on a VN is mounted up near the washer bottle. It has a plastic black cap on it, and one 25mm diameter hose running out of the bottom of it. A stock S1 will generally be a pain to keep cool if you don't have this system. A stock S1 can also be identified by the long stainless steel pipe running above the r/h rocker cover to the thermostat at the back of the manifold.
All you have to remember about the S2 cooling system, is that when you fill it up, there is a small bleed valve near the thermostat housing. The system requires you to bleed out the air in the system to fill it properly |

Posted - 22 May 2012 : 4:44:44 PM Do you have the surge setup out of the series one in your EH?? If you do not then it should drop straight in if I remember correctly. ECU is the same, wiring from what I remember is the same. What tranny did the engines originally have auto or manual??

Posted - 21 May 2012 : 10:01:59 PM The vast majority of the changes are on the intake manifold. The S1 has all the "hangovers" from its US GM heritage; surge tank cooling system, and a hastily installed pipe to the back of the engine for the thermostat (Holden were the only manufacturers to use it in a RWD car). So long as you get an S2 intact i.e. with the plumbing and wiring there it should be ok. The only thing I can think of that might be different is the ignition module, but adapting it will be a relatively easy fix. The S2 use a slightly different management chip, but the others will give you more detail |
