ok so heres the deal laid out so everyone can finally get this straight

all these myths of having to leave it as is coz it makes your car unroadworthy blah blah and that if you want 6x9s you have to have **** spacers...quite frankly come on who wants spacers?

the law is as follows;
it states that no STRUCTURAL metal can be cut in the parcel shelf

the metal under the holes is tack welded in at four joints this can be taken out without making your car illegal and or unroadworthy

its as simple as that

touch structural metal and your in trouble but other then that 6x9s in a parcel shelf on a VN is no problems

hope this helps

p.s it is always good to check your mounting depth thou to make sure you clear what is left, as sometimes the magnets on 6x9s can be quite large

I made a new flat parcel shelf moving the speakers forward to the cavity closer to the seat!.
No metal to be cut out, no spacers required and looks cool too I guess.
Cheers

nothing wrong with spacers i rekon, as long as everything is solid there is no prob. Mine are in and metal was cut out but face it ppl are to lazy to look for it if they wanna put a canary on your car. So many other minor things they can try. So i say be sensible,but cut away and screw them in, the standard parcel shelf it quiet strong.

Boost me, and double clutch me so i can get my. Loss of Traction!

I recently (January) had a new set of Alpine R-types put in the parcel shelf. We located them in the middle part closer to the top of the back seat, and we also had to cut holes out in the metal plate below this (not structural) to allow the magnets to fit (R-types have fat asses).

Now, I opted for putting them here for 2 reasons.. the stock place to put speakers in the parcel shelf is far too difficult to get to in my opinion. Second reason: There is a chamber beneath where I just explained my 6x9's are, which means the sound will bounce around in there and give the car far more "boom" when you play bass through them. Trust me, before i put a sub in the back, the 6x9's sounded like a set of 10's .. it was ridiculous how much they made the car throb.

Anyway - that's just my opinion on putting 6x9s in the parcel shelf, it worked for me.
