Here's my problem. With the amps I'm going to have in my boot I'm going to have a total of 1060WRMS in there.
What's my best way to get that much power down there?
1) Run a single 0-gauge wire from battery to boot, then run a distribution block to split to the three amps.
2) Run a 4-Gauge wire from battery boot for EACH amp (three 4ga wires in total).
3) Put a second battery in the boot and run a full 'smart' dual battery setup (same as for a propper dual battery setup in a 4wd).

Id go with option 3 then atleast if your car stalls at the lights you will have the juice to kick it back over :)
Then id run seperate 4 guage wires to each amp from that batt (buy one and chop chop) |

After posting that my uncle just happend to drop around (who is an autoelec), he said for a system like that I'd be best of running a 2ga welding cable from battery to boot. I hadn't even thought of that.
Appparently the welding power cable is just as good as normal car audio power cable in terms of power handling, except it's much more flexible.
He did however say that if I was going to upgrade it anytime in the future (which I'm not planing on yet) then I could look at the 2nd battery. Also, it will work out a bit cheaper. Said and done it'll work out cheaper, and until I've got the $$$ to fork out for a gel cell battery (optima) I'd rather not have a lead-acid battery mounted in the boot.
Damn stupid rego coming in the mail, taking away my 'play' money. :( |

run a spliter in the boot ... a 4 gauge wire from battery to one end of the spliter and it will have 3 or 4 out the other end and thats all 8 gauge the splitter has built in fuses that can be changed if blown ... i find them the easiest way |

Cheers for the advice and welcome to the club, but the problem has been sorted (about 5 months back), I've got a nice length of 50mm^2 arc welding 'earth' cable, that's going to run to a splitter.
There's no way in hell my system could run from a single 4Ga cable. Two amps and one inverter (gotta power the computer and wireless network gear somehow ;)) Plus half a dozen 12cm cooling fans to keep all that lot cold, plus lights. Based on the fuses in all the equipment, I've had to get a 200A fuse, there's no way 4Ga can take that, not over that distance.
*thread locked*: Dead thread. |
