Can anyone tell me if there is a difference in ECU between manual and automatic in the VN and VP V6? "Pub rumours" are never reliable, and would rather find out before the project really gets going. I'm going to fit a VN/VP V6 to an HZ/WB one tonner, and use the entire driveline. And if possible, are there any precuations I need to know about their electronics? I'm buying an off-the shelf conversion harness from Gardner Engineering, but any info would be welcome. Would also like to work it, but unsure as to whether anyone in WA can program me a chip to handle it.

exactly the same, im running an auto ecu on my manual, people complain about it stalling and other crap but it doesnt. The only thing you need to do is short the park switch if its manual on auto ecu. Otherwise the car wont start cos it needs to be tricked into thinkin its in park |
Just be thankful you got two legs to stand on and hands to grab sh*t with! |

ECU is the same but the memcal is different... an automatic memcal will run in a manual car but not the other way around! The tune between vn and vp are not the same but they are quite similar, you could almost say there the same. Either way it will work. |

I was saying you caught me out & you were right in your first post, the hydraylic box in the vn and vp commodore can use the manual tune in an auto & vice versa because the box changes gears & locks up the torque converter via oil pressure not in the tune itself like the vr commodore ( & upwards ) automatic transmissions.
The only real difference in the automatic tunes that the manual doesnt have is lean cruise, which most custom tunes delete this option anyway..
Moderators should modify that post to make sure noone gets anything messed up by my lack of thinking before typing? |

How easy is it to get a reprogrammed chip for the ECU, be it VN, VP, or otherwise, if I gave the specifics of cam and heads? Just covering my bases, as The HZ concerned is still in one piece, and will remain so until I get the money and time to rebuild the old workhorse. Electronics are the only part of the whole process I don't know enough about to be able to do much except for plug things in. I know for a fact that this engine will not be an Ecotec, as I have huge mistrust of alloy head engines. Have seen enough of them rot out, warp and burn valves to know I really don't want the hassle anyway. Admittedly most of said alloy head engines were Falcon sixes and Japanese fours, but the idea still puts me off |

Hey there, go on msn and add 'veganfrog@hotmail.com' his name is Jason Smith and does virtual engine simulations and will be able to help you on this one! Although a dyno tune is the best way for the 60 bucks he will charge you it will be safe, reliable and will work if you give him correct specs of your motor and its running in good condition. |

Either that or ebay, theres a few guys on there that can sort pretty cool tunes from a few specs. But as nodg says theres nothing like a dyno tune...but ching ching there |
