Hi i recently bought a VN commodore of a mate for $400. Since I bought it the trans has started slipp0ing or something. Im not sure quite what the problem is. When I accelerate the car revs extremely high, It dusn change out of first until about 65 km/h. When it does click out of first it sorta slips out of gear at about 80 kmh and when i accelerate there is now power and the car just revs. I know the trans pan is loose and it leaks trans fluid. Also when I pull up and look under the car there is smoke coming from the grates in the exhaust and off the exhaust itself. This may be due to the trans fluid leaking on the exhaust tho.

Any help or reccommedations would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, check the tension on all the sump pan bolts. Because the gasket is made out of either cork rubber or neoprene, they can shrink when left idle for extended periods. Next, check the cooling lines going to and from the transmission. Make sure they're tight.

The transmission slipping is usually caused by one of two things; the bands inside the transmission are stuffed, or you're running low on transmission fluid. Remember that Ford and GM transmissions use a slightly different grade of oil to each other, so read the label before buying it. If it doesn't say it's ok for GM, don't get it.

If there is ANY kind of oil dripping onto the exhaust, it will stream clouds of white smoke out the back. Find the leak and the smoke will stop almost immediately.

The valve body on the TH700 is mechanically shifted, not vacuum driven like the Trimatics. They can sometimes stick, and when they do, pull over and quickly tug the accelerator cable under the bonnet. you will feel a click. This is the valve body unsticking. To make it permanent, tell an auto transmission place you want an anti-stick spring fitted, and this will no longer be a problem if you keep it topped up with oil.

Like mechknight said, fill the transmission with fluid and if shes still slipping the bands or clutch packs are on there way out... can last a day or a year depending on how you drive it!

Cheers,
Nodg.
