Step 1: Turn on the ignition, but don't turn it over. If the pump is running normally, you should hear a buzzing noise for about 5-10 seconds. If you don't hear that noise, or it's intermittent, there is part of your problem. The second part, is as it's an electric fuel pump, there's both a relay and a fuse connected to it. They're under the bonnet, above the battery. To check the relay, swap them around with something else you can easily test, such as the headlights or the horn.

Another problem, is that once run dry, if you keep cranking the engine, sometimes the injectors need to be bled out of air. This usually means loosening the lines to the injectors, and once all 6 of them no longer pump air, the system is now should be ready to run, with the injectors tightened back down.

There's also the final "elephant in the room;" no telling what kind of crap was in the bottom of the tank. Water, sludge and whatever particles were in there would have been sucked in just before it ran out of fuel. Change the inline fuel filter (metal canister under car. Remember to point the fuel lines away from you when you change it) open the back of the fuel tank, and check the sender unit. Most tanks have a mesh filter screen around the fuel pump intake line.
