Hi I have a 1990 VN commodore and the gearbox has gone. A friend has gearbox in their garage, that may be a VR or VS. I was wondering is this ok to go in my VN as someone said it may not because the VS had an onboard computer? Any help would be great, or how can we tell the difference. Thanks heaps Meg

One way of telling the difference, is look under your car, and make a note of every electrical connection going into the gearbox. How many wires on each cable? What shape are the connectors? when you know that, look at your friend's gearbox and compare them.
You're sure the gearbox in yours is completely shot? If it's just slipping, it could be as simple as being short of oil. Although if it slips, shudders, and shifts rougly into gear, it doesn't just need a top up of transmission fluid.
Another way of identifying a transmission is to find its identification plate. Most autos have these, and usually have something like a model number, and possibly a serial number. If it has a model number, the VR/VS designation is 4L60-E. VN model designation is 700 R4, VP is 4L60. Apparently the "electronic/mechanical" differences between the two have to do with the torque converter, a part at the front of the gearbox that bolts directly onto the back of the engine. Not sure about VNs, as I've never done one, but usually this is a part you can take off the gearbox with your bare hands (warning: be ready with sawdust/drip tray. As this part is full of oil, it may make a mess when you remove it. |

Look on the passenger side for a large round plug with around 15 wires in it - if it has 15 or so wires & a round plug it is definately a 4L60E |
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

If you get any further probs let us know. Remember to keep the old gearbox, as occasionally automatic transmission places will give you money for a gearbox that's suitable for reconditioning. It might be only about $50, but it will likely cost you more than that to legally dispose of it. Ring around, someone might want it. If I was in a position to take it, I would. I have a project car, and the engine and gearbox will be out of a VN or VP Commodore. Could be handy to have a spare one for reconditioning. |

Some do,some don't. Obviously if it's got a hole through the side of it, they don't want it, but if it's something worth rebuilding, they might give you something for it |
