You could have a dodgy voltage reg in the alternator, and it's coincidence the two happened together. Check the two pin connector and the earth contact on the body; sometimes they can cause trouble if either one is even slightly loose.

There's a rank of fuses under the bonnet, and one of the bigger ones may be blown. Can't remember off the top of my head all the bigger fuses.

How far from the tail lights did you disturb anyway? there may be a clue in that I'm not aware of

That shouldn't do anything to the alternator, are you absolutely sure the alternator you put on is ok? There's only three things that can go wrong with an alternator internally; the bearings, the brushes, and the voltage regulator. To get a look at the brushes, undo the screws on the back of the alternator where the two pin plug connects. Attached to this will be two graphite-type brushes. If they just barely contact the shaft, get them replaced. If they're ok, you can test the alternator itself with a multimeter. Earth lead, and I think (unsure) it's the eye terminal under that red boot at the back. If the output is less than 12 volts, it needs work.

Three things: fuse, relay, internals of fuel pump itself. When you run on empty a lot, it can put strain on the fuel pump. Check the fuel pump relay, and there's a fuse for it too. To check the fuel pump is working, step out of the cab, and turn on the ignition. If you can't hear any buzzing noise towards the back of the car, there's no power getting to the fuel pump. Check the obvious first (fuel pump fuse and relay are under the bonnet) If both of those check out ok, then you do have a dud fuel pump. Unfortunately that is a fuel tank out kind of job, as the pump is inside the tank.

you can put fuelpump with the tank still in car ,i have done it two times - easy job .just dran the fuel out off the tank first,if you have a little fuel still in the tank just jack the frount off the car up or put car on a hill and you should be ok - so no fuel comes out when you take the old fuelpump out

i am not a licenced mechanic but i do have years off experience fixing and restoring cars and doing them up ,i can even do-motors-up,panel betting, spray painting, electrical work. i know What i am doing when fixing my cars, i am not saying i know everything on how to fix cars but i can fix them with information and help off the internet and this site.vncommador.com
