Was driving along, car running fine and all of a sudden the battery light came on and the car stalled. The car will crank and all the electrics were working and were not dimmed but it will not start. Checked all the rellevant fuses. Any ideas?

its a auto VN wagon.

Cheers

Is your engine check light on?? Try checking the flash codes first and we can go from there. There is a procedure to check your codes here if you need it - http://www.vncommodore.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=450
Let us know how you go with that.

What's the difference between understeer and oversteer?
Understeer is when the driver is scared.
Oversteer is when the passenger is scared.

yep ok we got a code "14" and a code "41". I suspect it is the code 41 that is causing the problem. So, it could be the crank angle sensor, coil pack or hopefully just a faulty connection somewhere. The car came with what looks to be like replaced leads etc. How do i go about checking the relevant wires for a loose connection etc?

Just check and make sure that the plugs are secure.
Do you have a series 1 or series 2 VN??

If possible, once you've established that the connectors are all secure, you could swap it out for one which you know works for sure.If it runs normally, it's 99% certain that this was your problem. If not, then you have to dig deeper.

There is full test procedures for both components in the Gregory's manual which you can pick up from autobarn/supercheap or similar. For most of the testing you will need a multimeter and a test light(cheapest one you can find will still be as accurate as the more expensive items. same goes for your test light) . There is quite a bit involved in the testing so I would suggest if you do not have these items to go down and get yourself geared up and ready for anything :D
The items will prove to be invaluable in diagnosing any troubles you may come across with your VN.
Just on another note being that you have a series 1 the coil pack do not have a good name and even if you do not find that this is the problem I would strongly recommend changing out this unit (coil pack and DFI module) with the better series 2 item. If you do go down this path I believe that the mounting brackets are also different so make sure you get the coils, the DFI module and the mounting hardware.

If you have any drama's when it comes to testing don't be afraid to ask and remember the only silly question is the one you don't ask :)
Cheers
