hows it going? Ive herd a lot of talk about this custom box for a VN with a CAI and pod. Mostly from mouse, i assume that you have done it on yours? How do you make it? I got a SS Inductions CAI from my mate for cheap, i have it mounted with the air flow to the pod, but no surrounding box. I want to know how to make this box for a pod to fit in.
What are the materials, measurments, etc...(doesnt have to be exacts)...?
Thanks

I did have it done on mine, however my neighbour wanted his CAI back and since I had been using it for about 3 months I gave him the box to go with it...and I haven't gotten around to redoing it on mine.
There are only two materials you really NEED to make it, sheet metal and pop-rivets.
The one I made was fairly rough-and-ready but it worked:
I got a chunk of sheet metal (I used the 'skin' from an old computer case I had kicking around), and bent it so that it was large enough to mount the pod. There was no bottom to it and no lid either at this point, so it was just the walls, and I only ever made three walls of it. I used the inside of the quarter-panel as the fourth wall.
The using a couple of little ****ty strips of sheet metal, I made up two straps to go underneath it (pop-rivetted to the walls of the box at the 'front' and 'rear' of the car. These were positioned so that the original nuts/bolts holding the old airbox in could be used to hold the custom one in.
Then I cut a bit of a U shaped channel into the 'rear' wall of the box and ran some PVC pipe from the end of the air intake pipe to where I wanted the pod to sit (in the box), bolted the pod onto the end of the pipe.
A lid is fairly easy to put together, you could get elaborate and use a hinge along one side so that you can just open it and close it as you need with a clip on the other side, or (as I did), just a nut/bolt in each corner to hold it down.
Don't forget that you'll need to cut a little section out for the CAI to be mated to. Other than that...it's fairly simple.
If you want, I can make another one up and take pictures as I go, but so long as you know how to use tin-snips and a pop-rivet gun it shouldn't be too bad.
The measurements will change from pod to pod, it depends on the size of it, there's no 'standard' pod size to put on a VN. Just make sure of two things, there is nothing stopping junk falling out the bottom of the box (ie. there's no 'floor' to the box other than the straps), and that the only thing touching the sheet metal is the PVC pipe (not the pod itself) and the outlet for the CAI.
As a good measure try to set it so that the pod isn't getting 'blasted' with the air from the CAI, otherwise you might blow holes in your pod. Have the pod sit high in the box and the CAI comes in low down, so you're all good.
When you're all done, paint it a funky colour and enjoy. :) |

i was toying with the idea(but prob wont) of cutting a hole in the bonnet above the pod and putting one of those grills on it to derect the air flow down onto the exposed pod, a bit wacky but thought it might look different and sorta cool

Actually...doing that tends to look really dodgy on commodores. In my opinion anyway. It's doable, don't get me wrong, but it's not great.
That and I'm not a huge fan of chopping holes in metal. |

| every heard of the trick of cutting a hole on the guard directly under the pod? The wheel is supposed to spin up air through the hole and into the pod. Probably highly illeagle, not to mention dangerous. Id like to see it done though. |

I've been giving this some thought....has anyone thought of using a plastic battery box of the marine variety as an airbox for the cai pod combination? I'm really not sure if it would work but it could be an alternative to the sheet metal and plastic is heaps easier to cut.

@chooba, yep, heard of it being done, and yeah...it's illegal...you need to get an engineers certificate proving that you've provided enough re-enforcing around the hole. It's not worth the hassle, as for the wheel spinning the air up...that one actually did have me laughing...It's crap...not to mention the fact that having your pod blasted with stones and mud straight from the road is going to kill it really quickly.
Using a battery box for the pod housing would work, but have you ever tried cutting those? Personally I'll take my chances with the sheet-metal, believe it or not it's usually easier than carving into a battery box. |
