Iv heard some people mention superchargers on this site and had a couple of questions to see if i want to go down that road in the future,
First how much and second what type of power increase are u lookin at and do u have to make any other mods/upgrades to accomodate for the increase of power?
Was thinkin of gettin an 88 supra, but then i though this would be heaps cheaper, not to mention how easy it is to get parts and also how much id love a vn sleeper!!

The amount that you need to budget for depends on the quality of the setup you want. It's possible to get a really cheap and nasty one done for about $1000-$1500, it's a little one only about 3psi boost, but that's enough to see a good difference in the power when taking off from the lights.
Then you step up to where I'm calling the 'mid-range' stuff, somewhere between $3000-$5000, that's going to get you a good quality supercharger, an intercooler to go with it (hopefully) and probably a custom tune on the memcal. It's going to give you a much better quality installation, that will last longer and end up giving you a bit more power than the cheap-and-nasty option above. If you don't already have one, seriously look at getting an LSD, if the budget can stretch enough get a good quality one like a KAAZ one, because all said and done the Holden ones just aren't up to the job.
Then there's the bigger ones, these are the ones which run more than 11psi of boost, this is where you need to start looking into strengthening the engine, and you can't afford to run a stock memcal with these. Think somewhere between $5000-$8000. These however will give you really large increases in both power and torque, and will see you wanting to consider upgrading the brakes and (in an auto) looking at a stage 2 shift kit. Wide, sticky tyres are a must, otherwise you'll just sit there going no-where in a hurry.
Then there's the off-your-nut chargers, for price, the sky is the limit, these may involve looking at water injection as well as the full custom intercooler, you will have to consider a full engine rebuild, either a manual box or a fully manualised automatic transmission. Depending on how high you run the boost you might have to look at upgrading injectors and possibly looking at another fuel pump too.
Really those are your options. When it comes to looking at a forced induction setup, you need to know how much you have to spend. If you can only afford a couple of grand then yeah, the cheap and nasty one that I mentioned first will do the job, but clearly the power you gain from it won't be anywhere near as impressive as if you spend a few grand and get a good professional setup.
In terms of power/torque increases, it all depends on how much you want to spend. For a basic setup a lot of people find somewhere between 20-30% increase in power/torque, but if you want to really break the bank it's possible to get somewhere around 800kw out of the Buick V6 with twin turbos.
Also...as a general rule, if your engine has more than about 250,000-300,000km on it, don't even consider looking at forced induction without a rebuild. The extra stress it places on the engine would mean that you'd need a rebuild soon anyway.
If you want to speak to a serious workshop about stuff like this, as opposed to reading my junk, get in touch with lolo...he's got contacts at a company called Speedwell performance (I think that's what it's called), they specialise in doing up cars...they'll be able to help you out. |

You may have seen those CRS superchargers they had on the toyota sprinters, those bolt straight into a VN V6 but ive heard theyre pretty sh!thouse. You no the ones that sit really close to the throttle body. Theyre a pretty lame excuse for a charger though. I got quoted i think $5300 from C.A.P.A. for a powerdyne charger fitted(no cooler) and tuned. They told be to expect around 170-180rwkw with a set of good headers, cat and hi-flow exhaust. I think that was at 7-8psi. The charger was a silent drive system that had a belt inside the actual housing itself so there was no oil lines or the 'whiney' noises thatll atract the coppas. They siad i dont need to have a cooler, but cooler air is better air. Ive got 142000 on mine and they said it would be a monster engine because the VNs they usually charge either have just had a rebuild, or are over 200000ks, so mine should have no worries handeling a charger. Itd probably be safe to get maybe a head andcam package first, just to strengthen this up a bit.
The way i see it, alot of people ask questions(including me) bout chargers and turbos on V6s, and people just turn the other cheek because knowone thinks people will go through with it. Keep in mind what mouse said, "800kw out of the Buick grand nationals in the states". |

Said and done there's no real reason to blow money on changing diff gears. Not with a supercharger though. The reason is that since the boost comes on from the moment you touch the throttle, there's no torque hole to over come. The standard ratio will work fine. As for the spool...not a great option.
Also...there's no need to spend your hard earned on a different ECU, there aren't many more flexible units than the delco 1227808 that's in there already. About the only system that IS going to give you any more real tunability is a full motec system, and there's no reason to blow that many dollars unless you're looking at a full track car.
A much cheaper alternative for the 1227808 delco is upgrading to the VR V8 ecu, I BELIEVE it's got a slightly quicker processing speed, and a MUCH faster ALDL connection if you want to use a laptop to read/control a few things. They work even in a V6, just make sure that you get the memcal written for the V6 and you're set.
Unless you're running well over 15psi there's no reason for an extra injector either. Sure, upgrade the injectors by all means, but there's no reason to add another in there.
^^^That parts list would be fantastic if you were looking at a track ready street car that's capable of running sub 10 quarter miles. For low boost (ie, below about 15psi, there's no reason to go that nuts. |

I was just thinkin of spending 2 grand so nothing too major, not lookin at somthing that can take on everybody, just something that i know goes hard when i want to.
im not wanting to go nuts, i remember someone on a diff post said they got quoted 2000 for a 100 kw gain, iven if thats at the flywheel id be wrapped as!
Would something like that be possible without to much trouble? |

A 100kw gain for 2 grand? I'd be impressed if you could pull it off for that price.
Assuming that you're starting from completely stock, you're looking at about $500 for a GOOD exhaust system (which you'll want if you're looking at adding 100kw), that leaves you only $1500 for the LSD, injectors, not to mention the charger itself, an intercooler (which you'd be wanting for a 100kw increase). Unless you've got some rather handy contacts in the right industries, I'd like to know how you get an extra 100kw out of a stock VN for 2 grand. |

all that stuff is in my car and runs very well
spools r great controllable fun i got a shimmed lsd after dot nabed me
2 grand will not give u 100kw gain at fly or atw
there is alot more to supercharging than just wack on a blower research alot more before u just go buy a blower without the stuff that needs to be done properly
if ur engine runs lean it wont last long and to rich causes quick detenation i have been down this path and learnt the expensive way now im educated from self experance now im fine now |
