Tweeters are designed to produce only very high frequencies, and while it would be possible to wire them straight onto the head unit, it would sound like poo.
If you want to get a set of tweeters, get yourself a good quality set of splits with a cross-over.
Splits (typically) consist of one midrange speaker and one tweeter. The midrange (as the name would suggest) handles all of the mid frequency sound range, it's not there to provide bass, but it's there to make sure that it doesn't sound too high pitched. The tweeter tkes care of all of the higher frequencies, the ones that the midrange can't reproduce properly. The cross-over sends the midrange frequencies to the midrange speaker and the higher frequencies to the tweeter.
That said, a good quality set of splits can cost a small fortune, if you really just want something coming from the front, then you can pick up a set of 2-way 4" speakers fairly cheaply. Just out of interest, what happened to the speakers that come from the factory that are mounted in the dash? There should be a set of 4" 2-ways in there already (unless you took them out).
I've got no speakers in the front door, and while some people think you need them, personally I've found that my ankles don't hear that well, I'd rather have the speakers closer to my head |

i would have to tend to agree with mouce here. i have splits at the front of my car running off the head deck and find that at a high frequency the tweaters stuff up... however it all depends on how loud you want to turn it up... lol i turn mine upt a bit. but for more of a cleaner crisper sound a small amp and splits would be the go... i did have 2-way 4" speakers and the dash before and suprisingly they went pretty dam good... really depends on the money you want to indulge with..

LOL...money...So far I've got more than $2000 worth of sound gear, and I still haven't got everything.
I've got splits up the front, and 6x9's (yuck) running off a JVC head unit.
The quality of the speakers is very important in how it all sounds. You might be able to find a set of 4" splits for $80 or so, but I can almost guarantee that my $220 splits will go louder and sound better doing it. When it comes to car audio, you get what you pay for. If it's cheap, it's generally dodgy. There's a few exceptions, but money buys quality. |

the cost for some nice sound... i belive my sound bill is over $3500 due to the fact that i have blown 3 12" subs up.. haha dam but yea.. 6x9 can compete with the sub when in the rear so 6.5" speakers are the way to go really.. and the 4" will fit in the factory holes.. |

Actually, the 6x9's don't so much 'compete' with the subs but the sound waves produced destrucitvely interfere with each other, which at certain frequencies, can cause some serious 'colouration' of the sound. So it sounds like crud.
Another big positive to having the 6.5" speakers in the rear is that your car will still be street legal. To fit MOST 6x9's in the parcel shelf of a VN you need to cut some metal away from the parcel shelf, which is illegal.
However hopefully your next VN will have speakers there already...when you get it you'll have to let us know. |
