For those of you that don't know, I build HO scale (1:87) models for a hobby. Today I had to replace the DFI module in my VN. I always ask my mechanic to leave any parts he replaces aside for me to examine. What I saw intrigued me
When new, DFI modules have a "filling"that resembles a very hard plastic. This one had been fried so badly, that it looked more like rubber, and parts of it underneath that chewy rubber surface had "melted" into sand granules. On examining it, I decided to dig the entire contents out of the casing. What I had left was a die cast shell.
I did some measurements and realisd that this was about the right height for a building on an HO scale layout. I cut it into three pieces; one forming a public dunny in a park, one piece excess, and one the warehouse for either a wrecking yard or a Holden dealership (haven't decided yet) The latter is painted Holden Rocket Red, as in the engine colour, and will send photos to whoever's interested once I'm finished.

| im intrested mechk. love models when i was a boy growin up in sydney i used to hassle me foster parents to take me to the Museum all the time loved the models they have there. The Holden dealership sounds like a gooden |

| Haven't got a photo of it lying around, but will send one soon. The place this building will become would be more like a wrecking yard because it's a bit too rough to be a Holden dealership. I've learned a lot of tricks on how to make a model 1:87 of actual size of quite a few things. My layout also has a model of a WA country-spec VN Commodore cop car. The only detail that will vary from how a standard VN country patrol car looked will be the blue lights (they used to have a single three bulb revolving light flanked by two blue cat's eyes. Far too hard to do when it's that small, because the cat's eye lights would have to be 2mm in diameter to work. Instead it has a blue strip light across the roof, made from a "glass" sprue from a model kit unrelated. Country patrol cars in WA often had huge UHF aerials on their tail and roobars, all of which I've added. The only details to be fitted are numberplates and the chequer stripes down the sides |
