So every now and again the engine warning light comes on for a few seconds, maybe 20 or so then disapears again a little later only to reappear. Is it possible to test it with the paperclip method while the light isnt on constintly? Cheers

when the engine light comes on the computer records the error. so the answer is yes you can check for the code even tho the light isn't on anymore . but every #? of starts the computer resets itself.

Being intermittent like that it will more than likely be a bit of a dicky connection to one of the sensors.
As VNGRPA mentioned the o2 sensor is bad for this.
Pull the plug for the o2 sensor and make sure there is no corrosion on the pins. Also very carefully remove o2 sensor and clean up thread on sensor and on exhaust system then reinstall and test.
This is just one thing you can try not necessarily going to fix it but it is a start.
Cheers

What's the difference between understeer and oversteer?
Understeer is when the driver is scared.
Oversteer is when the passenger is scared.
