hi all i got a winaldl cable old style which is conected to my comp through an adaptor but as i purchased this setup a while ago im not too sure if it works on windows 7. could anyone point me in the right direction as to a program that would suit windows 7 as the one i got has only 4 port options and all of them fail
I know it's an old post...but the information should be posted anyway.
In Windows 7 (actually all windows versions), it's possible to re-assign the COM port numbers.
WINALDL requires the adaptor to be assigned a number between 1 and 4.
Plug the adaptor in (I'm assuming it's a USB to RS232 adaptor), once all the drivers have installed themselves, and the computer tells you the device is ready to use...
right-click on "computer" (the equivalent to "My computer" from Windows XP) Click on "Properties" In the left hand pane, there's a link to "Device Manager", click it. Open up "Ports (COM & LTP)" Double click on COM2 (or another one you're happy to re-assign, and KNOW isn't in use by something like your mouse). Go to "Port Settings" click on "advanced" You can re-assign the port number here...pick one higher up, it'll warn you if it's already in use. Click on okay to save the settings.
Back in the Device Manager Do the same thing for the adaptors COM port (probably about COM12) Set it to COM2 (or which ever it was you just freed up in the previous section). click on okay to save the new assignment.
configure WINALDL to run on COM2.
Enjoy.
