There's often a lot of confusion about what engine people have, and all for no good reason, it's quite simple to pick the difference assuming that the motor hasn't been completely stripped and modded.
The Series 1 is most easily spotted by the fuel rails. The fuel rails on the series 1 motor are small black tubes. The coil pack is the next most obvious indicator, in the S1 it is a very blocky single piece with the leads on both the front and rear of the coil pack. Slightly less obvious is the top radiator hose. On the S1 motor the radiator hose runs to the back of the engine meeting the thermostat just under the throttle body.
The Series 2 by comparison has large rectangular silver fuel rails, the coil packs are modular units each triggering two leads. The leads all come out on the same side of the coil pack. The top radiator hose runs to the front of the engine just behind the pulley for the water pump.
There is also a Series 1.5 engine, however these engines were only made for a few months and share a LOT of similarities with the S1 engine.
Knowing if you have a Series 1 or Series 2 engine will often speed up the help that you ask for, as there are often different 'instructions' for each engine. If you ask for help, please let us know which series engine you've got.
