hey guys have been offered a vr engine and 5 speed as a trade for an ecotec motor and im told the vr motor is a stroker, is there any way to tell if this is so without pulling off the heads or sump? engine is still in a car that has had a front hit.

Engine numbers will tell you everything you need to know buddy -

SU - VN-VSIII replacement motor (pre 179/195kW engine)

SM - VSIII/VT replacement motor (179kW/195kW)##

SVM - VSIII 179kW/195kW Statesman ##

SVU - VQ-VSIII Statesman except 179kW/195kW VSIII.

VE - VN HSV 200kW (SV5000 and other 'red cover' engines)

VK - VN Group A 4-bolt (plus other 4-bolt models eg VP GTS)

VL - VR-VS 5.7L 215kW

VM - VT 179kW plus VSIII ute and Statesman 179kW. Also VSIII ute and Statesman with HBD 195kW engine. ##

VN - VT 304 HSV 195kW

VP - VL Walkinshaw and VT 5.7L 220kW HSV (different blocks, common number)

VU - VN to VS 304 (except VSIII ute and Statesman with 179kW engine)

That should cover most of them I think.

also i have 2 efi 5L's coming and want to know how to find out if either are factory strokers, any ideas?
thedunga Posted - 26 Feb 2012 : 6:19:07 PM
have to pull the motor out coz the shell is totalled but yeah pulling off the sump is a good idea, thanks guys. will be a couple weeks till it gets here but will let you know how it goes might be a good motor for the skid rig and use the box for another project.

With the engine in the car it would be easier to pull the heads. But if you pulled the engine the sump would your best bet.
You should be able to get some numbers off the crank and possibly rods that would tell you what it is.
Another alternative is put it on a dyno and see what sort of figures you get would probably give you an idea if anything has been done.

i would be pulling the sump off mate its much easier then the heads
thedunga Posted - 24 Feb 2012 : 9:15:34 PM
might have to pull the heads off cant see him still having them, cheers
VNSVLE Posted - 22 Feb 2012 : 9:37:43 PM
Cant really be done accurately with the heads on sorry buddy.
Only way other than heads off or sump off I can think of is if he has receipts for all the work done and you can check with the joint that did the work.

v6, was wondering if you can measure the stroke with out pulling the heads off.
VNSVLE Posted - 22 Feb 2012 : 01:00:13 AM
Is it a 5 litre or a V6 also if it is a V8 is it a genuine stroker??
