Howdy, i was at plaza holden a few months back, and the mechanics there reckon that i should drive my car in third gear. I have VN V6 auto. They reckon that the car changes thru the gears too much in city driving if you leave it in overdrive/ blue drive/ 4th gear.
Just wondering what you (auto) guys do when you drive and whether this is complete bs?? Cheers

ok me myself agree! But thats if your auto is running at opitmum! in the heavy traffic I keep it in 3rd but I find that the way I have my vn tuned, ( witch is a 4 speed auto v6 )4th does just fine!!! Inb other words dont let your mechanic tell you how to drive your car ................ AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I h8 hothole mechs that tell you what and what you should do!! Here's 1 for ya, fill ya tank up and run it on third like ya mech said!, Then run it in 4th (od) and see what you get per tank!!! M8 seriously this opinion will be varied as I know for a fact some of my good vn m8's on this site are qualified mechs and will disagree, but as a backyardy with a fairbit if not all my car knowledge is vn is sayin try it m8! I have learnt the vn all by my self , mind you,I have rebuilt and furked around with enough of them to tell! Anyways thats my opinion.... trizo out! |

| It comes down to how you drive as well... Basically if you want to save max petrol around town use overdrive, if your willing to use a bit of extra petrol leave it in 3rd around town because the drivability over hills and accelerating is improved as the motor is sitting on higher revs. overdrive was installed on the th700's to lower the revs on the highway and can be laggy around town. anything above 80 i use overdrive but thats just me.... |

Yeah same nodg, when im driving over 80 i use the overdrive - which generally isnt often in town...lol! But remember how i was having problems with my fuel usage, and i normally drive it in 3rd. So maybe ill give it a blast running a tank thru using 4th gear. |

| i reckon overdrive. this might be going of the topic a bit but who cares. with petrol most cars have a curising speed where they use less fuel like my calais uses less fuel when cruising at 100 km when cursing at 80 or under it uses more but you can reduce your fuel use but not taking off as fast at traffic lights or when doing u turns but most people with pod filters on there car use less fuel as there is no air reaction with increases your power and reduces fuel consumption as i found out. |

| so true, overally overdrive gives best fuel economy but third around town is optimal for friving without the lag of fourth! |

| HAHA lil bit l8 but i also found 3rd to be most comfortable but thats probably cos i love the popcorn sound coming down hills and it does it better at higher revs, but if i was driving at more than 80KM/H i would use 'OD' but drive it how u like, after all its ur car have a good 1 m8 |
