Guys, I have a 5.0 litre VN Calais with all of the usual weird things that VN's do, such as Speedo dropping etc but yesterday it did a weird one that has me worried.
I was driving off in the car and it went 1st gear, 2nd gear then when it went to go into 3rd it was as though the torque converter did not lock up and it was also not going into Overdrive. At 60 KP/H it would rev up to 3,000 RPM to stay at 60, instead of the usual 1,500RPm it would normally sit at. I pulled over switched it off and the fault went away. A few corners later it was Back!, I found slipping it into neutral an free revving the car would fix the issue with the car dropping back into top gear no worries when put back in Drive. A mate reckons Throttle position sensor, but I arent convinced.... Has anyone seen this before or got any tips to diagnose what the issue is??? Any info appreciated.

Throttle position sensor should have nothing at all to do with gearbox operation as the box is not computer controlled in the VN but instead is a hydraulic box I think... either way it uses a kick back / down cable.
The first thing I would be doing is checking the adjustment of the kickdown cable that is connected to your throttle body (you'll have to remove the covers to get a look at it if you're not sure where it is).
If that doesn't help let us know... and I could be wrong but I'm sure the other guys here will be happy to offer advice- welcome to the site! |

I would be checking the oil as trizo says for starters. Let us know what the oil looks like(black or clear/red or has little bits of crap floating) and does it smell burnt?? Let us know and welcome to the club!! |
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

remove the kickdown cable of the throttle plate and slide it in and out by hand a few times this will free up the kickvalve but first make sure the oil level and condition is all withing spec.

well Guys, I finally checked the fluid (In Neutral after 20 Min drive), and it was pretty much ok the fluid was mainly at the right Full mark but had a bit above the full too but it wasnt what I would call the oil line. I cycled the Kickdown cable by hand a few times and whether that fixed it or not I arent sure, but it only happened once quickly since I had done that, so maybe that fixed it. I will try and fully adjust the Kickdown cable over the weekend and see if that changes anything! Thanks all for your input, appreciate the friendly advice.

| Well I finally got this one sorted, I adjusted the Kick down cable as instructed, and it made the car change better overall, however my intermittent problem still occured, I again checked the fluid taking all care possible and came up with the idea it may have been 1/2 way between add and full, so I added a around 200 mls or som of Dexron III and it has been perfect ever since, the dipstick was a mongrel to read as there was some fluid about 25mm or so higher than the full that was confusing me a bit, but when you really looked close this was only a smear and the bulk fluid was sitting at the slightly down level.....thanks all for input, its been a good week and 1/2 without this happening now so I believe this was the issue in case this helps any other members in future. |

when you reset , it lets your ecm know that its been tampered with any old log codes or faults will be removed and you will have a notable effect on your throttle response! |
