Hey fella's, well I'm posting on behalf on my partners mother, she has a '89 VN Calais with god knows how many kms on it but approx 280,000...

Anyways, I'm just woundering about a few issues it has...

1) the speedo drops in and out when it wants, which I've been told could be the speed sensor on the side of the transmission - replaced the instrument cluster once thinking that could be the issue...

2) the car has a habbit of stalling when idling, I have no idea about that one (prehaps do a fault code check?){or maybe cloged fuel filter}

3) the trip comp allways says its using AVG 28.8L/100km...

They are just a few minor problems I wanna get fixed for her, as shes taking the car to mount gambier over easter (approv a 1,000 round trip from adelaide)...

Also the car hasen't been out of adelaide in 4 or so years, so I'm thinking of getting it a transmission serive, cooling system flush, and new plugs and leads before we go... and getting a mechanic to tune it... do you guys think its worth getting the injectors cleaned or just throw a bottle of injector cleaner thru the 'ol faithful before we leave?

anyways thanks guys :)!

hey man welcome to the site

as for the questions the speedo sounds like the sensor on the side of the transmission so id say wreakers job as they can be dear when buying new, as for thet stalling it could be that the IAC (idle air control) valve is either stuffed or clogged up with sh1t! (however it could be something else).....as for the trip computer reading 28.8L/100km it could be casue the speedo aint reading properly (speed sensor) and yeh id say wack some injector sleaner through a tank of fuel and see how it goes

jas is right there, but for the average kilometres on 28 litres.... this number is made up of the amount of kays done and the amount of fuel used, if the speed sensor is faulty then it will not be accurate, if that fails it may be a loose wire somewhere

Cheers,
Nodg.

ahh yeah, thanks for the help mate, I work at a crash repaier in henley beach (adelaide), and yeah I can get a speed sensor for $27.50 2nd hand at just commodore spares alltho going to a self serve wreckers would be cheaper but I got no licence and its not my car so meh (yeah guys I know, when I get my car it will be either another KS verada, or a TJ Magna VRX lol...)

Where in the engine bay is the IAC? It's a series 1 if thats any help :)... but I guess its alone the air intake ducting?

About a tune up, is it true you cant really tune the VN up (meh stock tune its a 50yo ladys car), or is it just figure out these couple of issues, and just reset the ecu?

thanks again boys

the idle control motor is bolted to the throttle body, spray carby cleaner in the little hole inside the throttle body mouth and see how much carbon deposits come out, give the whole throttle body mouth a spray once its clean and start the motor and spray a few bursts into the motor. as for tuneup's- only can be done by a professional that can modify ecu's athough a tuneup is also known as a major service so leads filters plugs etc..... then reset the ecu and it will tune to the new item,s.. also a good idea to replace the 01 sensor which will yield better fuel economy

What one is the 01 sensor?

Before the 1000k trip, I think I might just replace leads/plugs (dirty so they are old), new oil and filer, tranny service (as the tranny isn't smooth and it will gear hunt down the freeway), and do a cooling system flush and... fix speedo, figure out the idel fault, and see how it goes from there, its not really too bad of a bus for its age, its jsut that stalling issue manily

lol, sorry its the 02 sensor, which is located on the exhaust manifold near the transmission! what you just said would be a good idea, also check the placement of the kick down cable (you can find instructions how to on this site)

Why would I need to check the placement of the kick down cabel? just to make sure its dropping back when it should down the south eastern freeway (is kinda hilly and but a bit of a struggle on cars)

Does anyone know how much a trans and cooling system flush is worth? I could do the cooling system myself but mayas well get it done by the pro's when they do the tranny...

thanks fellas!

5 litres of dexron 111, and a filter and gasket to do it yourself, or 100-150 for a pro to do it. and yes the kickdown cable adjusted correctly wont make the trans hunt through the gears at light throttle and improve drivability

its what governs the amount of pressure in the valvebody and make a sluggish trans turn into a high revving beast
