my girlfriend got herself a car yesterday, a nice shiny 1996 primera. quite a good car, but, she is disqualified. she lost her lisence for demerits and then got caught driving and got dq'ed for longer and community service. tonight i went over and she wasnt home so i waited til she got there in her car. i then took the key, opened her bonnet and took her leads. as you can imagine she was trying to stop me and yelling at me and that sort of carry on but i took them. i just dont want her to go to jail for doing nothing but driving. i dont thnk her 11 year old boy would like it either. am i a total pr1ck or a good mate?

What you wanna need to watch out for is that she don't have you charged with thieft. By you taking her keys and the leads from her car, and pissing her off, she might go to the police thinking she will get you back, and that you can not prove she was driving just to get her car running again.
Personally, I would of let her drive the car, and then reported it to the police to teach her that there is more to consider than just not having the license. You gotta be crule to be kind and the best way would be to allow her to drive and let the police catch her and impound the car.
My 2 cents worth.. |

Nice moral dilema... quite a good question from an ethical stand point.
I can see a case argued that you did the right thing but I do agree with David in the most part. Dobbing isn't cool but she is a danger to herself and others (hence why she was disqualified in the first place).
I wouldn't have touched her car because that leaves you open to comebacks but definately would have told her the consequences of what she is doing and made your stance on the matter clear... it's fence sitting but really what else could you do? She won't listen anyway and it won't take her long to find another way of hitting the road if she's that determined. |

| can you imagine a girl going off her head to the cops because she doesnt have a license, keeps driving illegally and the bf stops this for a good reason..... the cops will pat the bloke on the back for doing a good deed and laugh at her. |

Aye, but it's theft of property.
Good intentions don't mean anything- she could have him for theft or willful destruction of property. And the cops can't speculate as to whether she was driving or not at that particular time- at best it's his word against hers which is a no win. It would be EXTREMELY easy to put her spin on the story and leave ol' kiwi with nothing but the warm fuzzy feeling from helping and the opportunity to go to court. |

| But the girl going off her head at the police and saying that someone who has a valid license can not use her car as someone has stolen the keys and the leads and her saying to them that she is not driving the car is one word against the other an a trip to the police station for the bloke. |
