Hi ya guys, i have a 90 VN Commodore, its done 340,000 something K's and has a ticking problem. when its idling it just ticks away happily to itself, and the ticking increses with revs. ive been told that its most likely the lifters. i did an oil change a few weeks ago and added lifter tune up (the good stuff, cant remember exactly what it was called, nulon free or something) and this helped but only very slightly. just curious as to whether or not theres other things which can cause this. the noise is coming from the engine bay but i cant figure out exactly where from. im probly gonna change the lifters anyway but does anyone know if theres anything else i should muck around with while im in there? any help/advice would be appreciated!... within reason =P

Check the exhaust manifold is tightly bolted up- escaping exhaust gases can tick as well.
Run some injector cleaner because dirty injectors can tick. Before you run the injector cleaner, replace the fuel filter so you've got a nice clean unit on there and don't dislodge crap out of a crusty old one. If you've got a dirty filter, the injector cleaner might do more harm than good.
What oil is in it at the moment? |

It all depends whether it's really clogged and how much crap the injector cleaner dislodges from it.
It's probably just one of my unfounded funnies, but I'd just prefer to replace the filter before putting a cleaner through and redistibuting crap through the rest of the fuel system. |

| is it just me imagining i made a post or was it deleted out of here? mate it could be a few things which include worn lifters(the nulon lifter free wont fix that only quieten it a little like you mentioned), injectors (abnormal, they should tick quietly). Thats naming a few of the minor things that may be causing you trouble but some more serious problems include possibly a worn gudgeon pin, worn transmission(they can tick but not quite as loud you described) and the timing chain. if you get a piece of hose (or a stethescope) listen for the ticking over the rocker covers, theres proper places to specifically listen at on the rocker cover which is a bit hard to explain over the net, so listen at random points) if you cant hear anything it may still be a lifter but can give you something to do when in the garage scratching your head. |
Cheers, Nodg. |
