hi guys new and im so glad i found this place.
i'm having some trouble with the steering lock in my vn, well i think its that anyway. The ignition has been stiff lately, and it feels like it almost sticks when i turn it to start the engine (i have to sort of pull it back after the engine turns over). also, the steering lock engages at a certain angle, probably 45 deg to the right when i turn it right. i have to sort of force the wheel in the direction im turning for it to clunk over it, then it drives normally again. i dont think its the power steering because it seems to work fine, its just this locking at the angle. i was wondering if there was any way the ignition could be affecting the steering lock engaging. i have no clue on stuff about the steering.
i hope someone can help!! cheers

| I couldnt c the iggnition having a issue with the steering lock , how ever it does engage when the iggnition is off! if you can have a look behind the steering wheel at the top and you should c a little bolt/pin that lcks your wheel when engine is off, c if there is any clearence there, I could only suggest that it sounds like the steering wheel has had a hefty knok and rubs against the steering lock pin and isnt properly disengaging when you turn the key! I had the same problem at 1 stage and it was a matter of forcing the wheel away from the pin enough to fully clear, mind you my steering lock never worked again after that! With you igniton spray a little crc in the lock (not to much just enough) that should loosen the barrel up , you could even try a bit on the steering lock pin! let us know who you go! Just be aware that what you are describing is a serious problem (especialy if its lockin on whilst driving) I'd be seening to it asap! And hang in there m8 there are heaps of members here with alot of knowledge of the mighty vn! Welcome to the site aswell! |

Instead of crc i would be trying some graphite powder first in the same spots that trizo suggest for the simple fact that it is a dry lubricant and will not "gunk up" over time. Maybe even remove the barrel, spray some crc into it and work it with the key to free things up. Then get some electrical contact cleaner(get the flammable stuff as the non flammable has a tendency to eat plastic) fluch all of the crc out of it once it is freed up, dry the barrel out and then use graphite powder. Worse case scenario if it doesn't free up get yourself a new barrel. From what I hear you can get them brand new for very little. Anyways have a go and let us know how it goes. Oh and welcome to the club |
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

ill have to spray the barrel tomorow cos its dark and i dont havre a garage or light to see what im doing now.
Trizo u mentioned the pin at the top of the steering weel, its a gold pin for me attached to a wire, but i think it triggers the horn rather than the steering lock, unless there is a another pin i havnt seen yet.
thanks for the help so far guys |
