Hey guys i no this might sound like a really stupid question but i dont no so,,,, i've noticed in a few forums that you guys have been talking about error codes in the motor. what are they and how to i check them? (please explain in laymans terms!!!lol)
I'd gladly push my holden than drive a bloody ford!
There is no real easy way to explain it........ I appologies in advance if I sound patronising. For a general break down of your car you have your engine. As technologies have evolved they have coupled the internal combustion engine with a computer. essentially to save mechanics time. the on bourd computer or ECU contains programming of how your engine should run. If the engine does something unexpected then it will record it as an error code for future checking during services. if a sensors fails then the mechanic who has patched into the cars ecu which can be accessed on the passenger side of the car I beleive behind the kick panel with a peice of diagnostic equipment ill say a laptop. they can then find out what the problem is and fix it with out to much hassle. or lacking this tecnology (The following is going to lack details because I dont want any one to blame me for blowing up ther car.)The description is in another post for the use of bridging the socket with a paper clip or use with an ALDL lead to a computer.
forgot to mention there is a light on your dash called a check engine light. when you first turn the key in the ignition to start adozen lights light up. one of the is the check engine light shown by an engine with ! in it. once you start your engine it will go out actully might go out once the fuel pump cuts out but if it stays on after you have started the car or come on during driving then the car is telling you the computer has logged an error code. And could be indicating that your car wont be running at its optimum performance.
There's a good how to floating around on this board.
Basically, the sensors provide the computer with information to keep it running right. If something goes tits up, the computer illuminates the check engine light on your dash letting you know there is an issue. You can then use the same light to display the code with a number of flashes. These flashes determine the error code number and you can find the list around the internet or in a gregories.
From there, you should be able to pinpoint the fault and rectify it. SHOULD ;)
If it makes you feel any better hsv babe the whole concept is new to me too. my last car ran a carburetor (I wont mention the name of it) but it still had no need for a computer. tuned the carby my self and boy did it go. My VN is displaying the cel so Im going to attempt to have a look at those error codes today
