I dont either but what I do understand is that they measure download speed at how much data your line can take at once from what I can gather K=thousand m = millions gig=............ No Im overmy head here. What I can tell you is that you optus wireless is running faster then my dial up connection. 56k is the max of what a dial up moden will run at. when you say optus wireless did you get one of those USB modems that a few companies have out atm. I was looking into it but my 3year old daughter thought it would be amusing to take the brochures out of my pocket and leave them at her granmas

im on a 40 dollar a month wireless plan through vodafone (5 gig a month) it works during the day but at night it keeps disconnecting itself and carries on for hours sometimes, if that happens for more than 1 night i get ****ty and phone them up and ask for my month for free as im not gettign what i paid for.
By the sounds of things, ALL wireless service providers are like this. |
Cheers, Nodg. |

yeah wireless is a bit touch and go...
best to get a wired adsl2 - you can get great speeds on those and its not too dear if you sign up with a contract - 20g+ a month for around $60. Just make sure you get the plan where if you go over the doownload limit it shapes your connection. If they charge you then its a trap...
check out www.whirlpool.net.au - they have a good little utility on there where you put in what sort of service you want and it brings up all the suitable ISPs - freakin awesome really.
Me - i heard IInet and tpg aren't too bad - IInet is the fastest around but a bit pricey and TPG is probably best value for money. I just use my work's connection cause i will be moving to melb soon to join the forces, so i didnt want to sign a contract as i'll be on base for pretty much all of next year. |

| if you can afford it and you haven't signed up to a contract already - ask around if you can get cable. Its the fastest around - should be able to download a full dvd in a couple of hours (or less) |

no it doesn't mean you can watch cable tv but if you have a cable tv already it is cheaper to set up. its about 200mb per second. which basically an average movie is about 4500mb if thats any indication to how fast it is. so my earlier estimate of a few hours is waaay out. Adsl and wireless speeds are dependant on how close you are to the tower that puts out the signal. the further you are the slower it gets sort of thing. an average adsl speed is about. compared to cable, ADSL is less likely to maintain a constant speed. cable does have its problems too¨C a fast connection can exist in theory but you are sharing bandwidth with your neighbourhood and therefore speed is affected. Wireless broadband is subject to interference from devices such as cordless phones, fish tanks, microwaves, air compressors - the list goes on.... (which is probably why you were dropping out) whatever you go should be an improvement as wireless can be a bit of a B45T4RD. Some people don't have many prblems but i guess it depends on how strong the signal is where they are.
lol - If it's a weak signal then you could be copping intereference from the neighbors cat *jk* |

hi guys i thought i might clear up how its measered there is 8 bits in 1 byte 1000 bytes = 1 kilobyte 1000 kilobites = 1 meg 1000meg = 1 gig and so on now internet conections are in KB or kilobytes so a 56kb per second conection should download 1 meg in aprox 20 seconds this all depends on your phoneline how old it is and how far you are from were the information is being downloaded from.
adsl as we know is faster but still has its limitations depending again on phoneline age and distance from the exchange some speeds you may have seen are 256kb 512kb 1012 so the higher the number the faster the conection
just remember when looking at internet conections telstra still owns it all thay just rent it to the other providers so there all farly much on par except for the price shop around for a good price at the speed you want ( im with telstra but im going back to netspace as telstra is too high for the usage i use) that is the other thing when looking at adsl or cable dont forget to look at the download limit on your plan there are a fue ways thay do it 1 is to charge you per Meg for every meg you are over your limit the other is to cut back or trim your speed so you will go down to dial up speeds till the end of the month
ok ill shut up now hope this helps a bit lol
