well this is for my VS not vn as the vn has a crap paint job lol but it would refer to a vn/vp with good paint
now it has alot of little swirly scratches in it and some fine scratches....i have wax and polish for it but need something to clean and cut the paint so it blends in well and gets rid off all the scratches and swirls .."Note, none of the scratches are deep just surface...and annoying lol
so what do you guys recommend? (of teh shelf products at sayd auto barn repco etc..)...i have detailed me parents vn before but that didn't have the type of paint the VS has ( think it has metallic paint...and is a red purplish color) as the vn was white...it was easy to polish haha
cheers

For swirls you really need a very, very fine cut. I wouldn't bother with cut and polish as the one size fits all approach rarely works.
Personally, I'd look at Poor Boys SSR 1.0 because it's cheaper than off the shelf products, easier to use and gives a better result. If that doesn't get them out, use Poor Boys SSR 2.0, follow it with SSR 1.0, then a polish (PB Pro Polish) and a wax or sealant to fill any minor imperfections and protect the surface. For curiousities sake, the SSR goes 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 with the higher the number the more abrasive the polish but you need to refine the surface as the 2.5 and 3.0 will marr it and need to be followed by a lighter cut. Those polishes are about $20 each and if you are keen send me a PM and I'll let you know where to get them if you can't Google a result- you can get this in Australia!
Really out of the off the shelf products you are probably looking at a Maguires Detailing Swirl Remover which is a light cutting compound but I think you'll need a machine polisher to get the most out of it. I know Supercheap carries it but not sure of the cost.
Depending on the severity of the swirls, you should be able to fix it up by hand and very easily. I know it doesn't answer your question exactly as you would have liked but in my experience there is a very limited range of off the shelf products that are good for swirl removal. |

Swirls are usually caused by dirt during washing- unfortunately no matter what you try sometimes it just isn't avoidable. Especially considering sponges are baaaad for it (they don't really have any place for the dirt to go so it ends up caught between the paint and the sponge surface, cutting the paint). Using something with a deep nap gives the dirt somewhere to go and that's why mircofibre and lambswool are so highly regarded... washing with two buckets helps aswell.
Depending on how light they are the polish could get them out. What are you using to apply the polish- a cloth or one of those applicator things? I use a 'Polishing Pal' which is a knob thing with a velcro facing which accepts four inch polishing pads so you get the advantage of the different cuts there aswell. I've removed some pretty ordinary scratches from a 2007 X-Trail with just an orange pad (cutting pad) and Mother's Sealant and Glaze I think it's called. The polishing pal thing was one of the best things I even bought- about $35 dollars with two orange pads, two red pads and two white pads.
Without the cutting pad it'd depend on the scratch as to whether it comes out or not.
*Any other questions just ask and I'll do my best to help! |

the swirls arent that bad just heaps of them as i think the old guy before me never polished it..all in all there only very very light.
there are a few places from car parks were people have leaned on the car nothing major though...the car isn't anything fancy but its just me to try and make it look good :P
i do have some Maguires paint cleaner that i tried and it helped alot (been sitting in cupord for about 6 months lol) so ill try that see how it goes then try polishing it/ waxing

No worries- if the paint cleaner helped a clay bar would amaze you.
It does reach a point of depreciating returns though... I hate it when I look at how much I've already spent and how much more I could spend if I won lotto- it's cringe worthy! |
