are you sure teh alternator is stuffed? as the regulator on teh back of them is normally the culprit.

To remove alternator you will need to disconnect battery take the engine belt off then undo the bolts holding the alternator on. behind this there is the main wire going to the alternator, undo this (and the plug for the regulator)

then its a matter of putting new one on but make sure the main wire is not touching any part of the engine or you could end up doing what trizo did and frying all the electrics and possible burning your car.

this is for a V6...if yours is a V8 disregard this

have you got a mutimeter? if so check the volts of the battery when car is off and then when it is on.....should be around 12 volts when off and 14 when on if not take off the regulator on teh alternator...the brushes may be worn (very common) reason why i say this is that allot of people mistake it as a faulty alternator when it is teh regulator ...not say it is in your case but it cant hurt

its the black thing on the back of the alternator...has a plug leading to it and has 2 little screws. regulator is around 30-50 bucks and alternator is about 200= (for new)

this is the regulator http://holdenpaedia.oldholden.com/Image:PC080033.JPG

if its not holding a strong charge while running as jas said it may be the regulator although it sounds more like a dead alternator, does the car eventually stall when driving with the lights on? and feel sluggish?

Cheers,
Nodg.
