Hey troopers..... Its been a while since I have posted anything here... For those of you who know me, my VN which was stolen over a month ago has still not been recovered..... So now I invested in a VL.... One year earlier.... I love the shape of these ones... plus its something new to learn...

Now I know this is a VN site but I am hoping some of you may know about VL's too.... This arvo I was driving back from the coast and she was running smooth as... but when I hit brisbane and slowed down for some traffic congestion, I heard a loud sharp clanking noise from under the centre console.... the gears werent slipping and nothing was stopping it from driving.... however when I gained speed to about 40ks the back wheels (left hand side) were shaking something fierce and the sharp clanking noise was still evident just faster... when I past about 40ks the wheel shakes stopped and the sharp clanking noise seemed not to be there.... only when I slowed down under 40...

If I can describe it further it sounds like something has come loose that is metal near the gear box and something is tapping it (metal on metal)

Any hits or ideas of what I can look at to help me find the problem faster??

Any help would be awesome.... thanks heaps!!

is it an auto or manual? also is the noise still there in idle? how fast is the noise when you arent moving? try putting it in park (or nuetral in manual) and let it idle, then try putting some revs on. let us no what sounds its doing when you do this.i have a slight feeling on what it could be but not sure unless i no these details.

I'd gladly push my holden than drive a bloody ford!

Heya... Its an auto... I jacked the back of the car up off the road and put it into drive.... it wasnt making the same noise again... however it was making a droning noise but not loud..... It doesnt make the noise when in idle or when it has stopped... only when taking off slowling then when hitting a speed of about 40ks does the car shake with that noise as well... and then it disappears once past that speed....

One of my other mates thinks it could be the tail shaft joints... a dust cover or something small.... but it has got me peeked out something fierce...

Get under the car and grab hold of the tailshaft and give it a good wriggle side to side at one end and then the other. There should not be any movement. If there is then yes one of both of your universal joints are cactus. They are not overly hard to change if you have a few tools and you know how to use them.
If it is not this jack the back wheels off the ground and give them a wriggle side to side and turn them also. See if the noise is coming from them.
Let us know how you go with that.

What's the difference between understeer and oversteer?
Understeer is when the driver is scared.
Oversteer is when the passenger is scared.

Heya VNSLE.... I did wriggle the tail shaft, it didnt wriggle all that much... maybe a millimeter if anything... would that be standard?? When I jacked the end of the car up I did put the car into drive and the wheels (one of them) spun as per normal and the other stayed put, but I could spin it by hand.... no noise came from the car then....

Would you think the tail shaft bearings would make that sound??

I tell ya what, VL's are a whole new learning experience for me lol

Have you tried the the front wheels?? Does the steering shake??
I dont believe that the vl has a center bearing (i could be wrong though and if there wasn't so much grass around the one in the back yard i would check to be sure :) )
The movement you describe it the tailshaft sounds about right.
Check the front wheels and let us know how you go

Here is some news for ya.....

With the car jacked up from behind and everything secure.... I jumped in and reved it up in drive to about 120ks for a bit.... it shuttered a little bit... not the steering wheel though... so me thinking it may need a wheel balance or something..... I braked to put it into park and as I changed from "drive to park" I could here a small amount of noise but not like the metalic tapping/clanking noise it was originally doing but a bit of a clunking, not severe though... so I am thinking it might either be a bearing or uni joints as someone told me....

According to some VL users... there are two tail shaft bearings and a CV joint as the tail shaft is in two pieces.. the CV joint allows the bend for the second section of the tail shaft...

I let down the car and thought to test drive... I reversed it back a little (no noise)... I drove forward (no noise)... so I repeated again with a little further distance... no noise... so I thought to take it around the block.... no bloody noise!! It drove fine.... WTF??

I tested all the wheels like you said VNSVLE, and no noises coming from the wheels....

This has now got me puzzled to all hell..... what should I do??
