Hello Everyone, I have just signed up so.... YER!
Anyway guys, I'll get straight to the point, I am currently paying off for a VN Commodore Ex-Cop car Auto, $1000. I just wanted to know, Am I getting
ripped off? Is it worth fixing?
Problems I have noticed so far; - Slight Rough Idle - Cracked Drivers Side Mirror - Drivers Side Door Lock Broken - Boot Lock Broken - Petrol Needle Has Broken Off Inside Gauge Set - Speed-o Meter Is 20km/h Out (40km/h is 20km/h) - Door Seals Broken/Missing - Fuel Pump Has Stopped Working Once (Got underneath and hit it, worked!) - Shocks need to be replaced. - ODometer is stuck on 250000km - Has Woodgrain Steering Wheel, Defectable, Needs to be replaced. - Radiator Water is dirty (Have flushed 3 times already) - Rear Drivers Side Quarter Panel Hit By Ute, Needs Replacing
Other than that, it goes hard.
Everyone's thoughts and suggestions are more than welcome!!!!
Cheers!

i have a vn BT1 (Thats what the ex's are called) and it had done 154,000 approx and had hardly any damage was in real good nick for $150 bucks. Only cos the guy who sold it to me (my now ex) didnt no it was one till i brought it lol, what i would suggest for you to do it get prices on how much its going to cost you to fix everything and make sure you have it in writting, and then sit down and think is it worth fixing it for what you have to pay and what you've paid for the car, if you are thinking what am i doing then its normally a good sign that your trying to tell yourself that it was a bad idea lol |
I'd gladly push my holden than drive a bloody ford! |

- Slight Rough Idle? Holden basically built that into the motors - Cracked Drivers Side Mirror Pretty cheap, go to a wrecker - Drivers Side Door Lock Broken Again, pretty cheap and easy - Boot Lock Broken If it's the actual key barrel, that's fine. You've got the boot release in the glove box - Petrol Needle Has Broken Off Inside Gauge Set That's a problem, you kinda need to know how much fuel you've got :P - Speed-o Meter Is 20km/h Out (40km/h is 20km/h) Sounds like diff gears have been changed. Go to jay car to a get a speedo corrector kit - Door Seals Broken/Missing Get a new set from Rare Spares - Fuel Pump Has Stopped Working Once (Got underneath and hit it, worked!) Replace. Replace. Replace. I cannot express this anymore, it could die at any minute. REPLACE IT NOW - Shocks need to be replaced. It's a 1990 or so car. I think it's time for a new set of shocks - ODometer is stuck on 250000km Grab another dash from the wreckers with close kms on it. Solves your fuel needle problem too - Has Woodgrain Steering Wheel, Defectable, Needs to be replaced. That's a later on thing - Radiator Water is dirty (Have flushed 3 times already) Obviously not enough. Keep flushing it - Rear Drivers Side Quarter Panel Hit By Ute, Needs Replacing Replace. Simple |

Ok, I am 22, I current am on my L's, getting my P's in September, This is going to be my first car. Proberly sounds complicated, but I have only paid for Half at the moment. What I am really asking, Is it worth $1000, then spending money?
I live in South Australia, I figured the following; Dash $29 Fuel Tank with Fuel Pump $39 Drivers Side Door Lock $7 Steering Wheel $22 Shocks $100 pair Quarter Panel $50
So, need to spend about $400 I rekon.
So, the question is this, If you were me. Would you buy it? |

fuel pump for $39 im guessing thats a second hand one if so better off buying another one off ebay because that one could fail and at least that way you know your fuel pump wont let you down again, also i think you are getting ripped off for $1000 if the clock is stopped on 250 000kms your car could have done 500 000kms you just dont know , if you can get your money back i would and look for a better condition vn or maybe vp for the same money , and you know what to look for now when finding a second hand vn/vp , anyways goodluck . |

yes i strongly agree with white vg on the fuel pump, it always pays to go brand new, because if you go second hand you may just have the same problem a week later, your better to do it right the first time |

Welcome to the site m8,,, I can only say to you one thing! Buy it if you want it!!!!! Its all good us being in your shoes and saying yes/no, but were not in your shoes and really our opinions are just that (opinions) at the end of the day buy it / dont buy it... its upto you.. I think they are a great first car to own as far as working on them and parts ect are a dime a dozen , the downside to owning one of these is, there 20yrs old and well most of them have had the arse ripped out of them over the years,, I think your getting a good deal and with the few repairs you will have your self a good car!!! |

Thanks for the input guys! I still have the car. I have bought the manual for it and been fixing it slowly.
So far I have fixed; - Replaced Cracked Drivers Side Mirror - Replaced Instrument Cluster which fixed Speed-o and Petrol Neddle - Flushed radiator several more times, NO MORE DIRT! - Fixed the Fuel Pump, Replaced! - Fixed the Door Seals my re-glueing.
Only problems I have left to fix now are the most expensive parts such as; - Suspension and shocks need to be replaced (Over $1000) - Rear Drivers Side Quarter Panel need to be replaced (Over $750) - Drivers Side Door Lock Broken - Boot Lock Broken
Thank you guys for your input and feedback!
I welcome it. Thanks again guys! |

If you have the money (local quote in WA was $160) might pay to get your instrument panel reconditioned. Old problem; because they are kinda sticking out, they get more heat damage than other models. The place in WA that does them is AISAT Instruments, and they can calibrate, recondition, and completely repair your instrument cluster. This is the same kind of rebuild you could expect of an engine.
As for your locks, buy the locks and have a locksmith code them to your current keys. Easy to do, and if it costs you more than $25 a lock, he's ripping you off.
As for the suspension, shop around for the parts you need, get the best price, and get a good grease monkey to fit them for you. |
