Hi guys,
A friend of mine changed my front wheel bearings about 3 months ago and now all of a sudden I'm getting that whinning noise again and on the drivers side I'm getting a thump thump like i have a flat tyre but you can't feel it through the steering wheel, does it sound like the bearings or could it be something else?

I'm no expert so i'm not about to throw any ideas out there, but have you jacked the front end up and had a look around underneath to see if anything is either missing or loose? I tend to get a whining noise from the steering rack when the power steering fluid is getting low. Not sure about the thumping. |

whinning noises can be caused by incorrect tyre wear,is the whine at low speeds or high. Also at what time does the car thump ie.over bumps , speed related or under braking. |

ah, the whining normally get's louder as the car goes faster, it's the same with the thump thump get's faster as the car goes faster, the thump sounds a bit like a train on tracks, I have a feeling that he might not have put the bearings in properly because when he took my old ones out they were worn because i got new rotors, and with the new rotor you got half a bearing.I will jack it up and see if i can see anything, it does sound like a flat tyre but not as loud |

Mate what you described is the incorrect procedure of packing grease into a bearing with the palm of your hand! it takes a bit of practise to get it right so dont feel too bad haha. You can get a device from super cheap that will pack the grease in properly for you ! good luck and let us know how it goes! Also if he was a noob and didnt know what spec to tighten the wheelbearing nut get him educated.. nip it up till its just tight/firm then back it off a touch...
The thud thud is most likely some **** he hasnt put back in properly :) but check your tyres with an accurate gauge to be sure, or even park it on a gutter and see if there noticeable flex in the sidewall. |
Cheers, Nodg. |

Easiest way to check if your bearings are loose, it to park on flat ground, grab the top of the front wheel and rock it. No rocking, then it's as tight as it should be. If it is making noise, then either somebody screwed up in putting it together, or they're too tight |

Hey guys,
yeah one of mates had a look, they were bone dry and actually welded themselves, got them off and packed the new ones by my friend who is a mechanic, now everything is perfect no whinning or thump thump.

ive seen the same thing many times with cars done at workshops and they have only packed the bearings them selves and not the whole hub you should fill the whole hub with grease or they get hot all the grease runs out into the empty hub and you have the same issues a month later LOL |
