I have a 87 VN V6 sedan, 140,000 on the clock, full regular maintanance records. My problem is it absolutely reeks of fuel for hours, after it has been running for more than 15 or so minutes. The smell gets worse the fuller the fuel tank is. Economy is terrible & yes I have my fuel cap on properly. No leaks anywhere I can see & runs fantastic other than economy. Only getn 320k's from a full tank around city driving like grandma duck, neutral down hills, switch it off at lights, gentle acceleration, no speeding. 320km per tank full to dry is the most I can get out of it. That's running 95 premium too. On 91 regular it drops to 295 per tank. The really weird thing is that it only takes 45lts to fill it back up again. Anyone got any ideas? Especially about the stink. Been told possibly return pipe to top of tank might be cracked?

Sounds like your fuel breather pipes are cracked. You'll have to drop the tank to do them. It's an absolute pain of a job.

I've gotta say though, I sure as hell hope you meant 89 VN. They weren't around in 87

thats what it will be a cracked breather, when this first happened to me it took me ages to work it out as I was lazy and refused to believe that the fuel pipe could be cracked with out seeing any fuel,, in saying that take you rear drivers wheel of and get into all the fuel hose lines ,, I will bet my bottom dollar there will be at few perished pipes ,, if you are gonna do this make sure you go and get a couple of lenghts of fuel line .... Welcome to the site also m8.

G.O.M. has just given a perfect description of what i experience word for word. Will have to get that checked out. The smell, the poor fuel economy, and the fact that you fill it up when she is bone dry, and the most you can get into her is 45 litres. Never thought to ask that question. Bravo G.O.M and bravo to the answer crazy and trizo! Thanks everyone

Sorry guys was on hols with the kiddies. Thanks for the advice. Spot on. Was a split in side of return pipe. All good now. Reseting the ECU helped with the economy abit too. Still can't work out why only 45lt from bone dry to full though. Thought the pump might not be picking up properly but it seems to working fine (stuck a new one in anyway) & is sitting in the right position. The tank is definitly the stock 63lt job not some aftermarket thing. Can't wrap me head around it but getting great economy & runs good. I just have to fill up more often. Thanks again.
