The fluid will come out when you disconnect the two lines carrying fluid, would you like me to explain the process?

Best to have a hoist, but can be done on jack stands.when the wheels are off undo the nuts on top of tie rod ends until there is a couple of threads holding on,bash stub axle with a decent size ball hammer until tie rod end dislodges, now let them hang free.Clamp of fluid lines and undo [keep an eye out for the o rings].Undo 13mm nut and bolt connecting rack to shaft pull bolt all the way out.Undo the 2 mount bolts on the k frame. From here sum wriggling is needed as you dislodge the rack from the k frame you might need to pry it out.Pull your tie rod ends off old rack and fit to replacement if you need to.Center the rack, wind it all the way in one direction then count the turn to the other side then half that number and wind back that many turns[now in the center] .make sure steering wheel is straight. Then just fit rack to your k frame, get the steering collum shaft connected to rack as you guide the rack into mounts, bolts in place on k frame and shaft, hook up fluid lines firm but not overtight pay attention to o rings.Dissconnect clamps.Hook up tie rod ends.Check fluid level, start the motor and fill the resivior again turn steering wheel until all air is out of the system.Go get wheel alighnment. Then replace fluid in 100klm[do this when fitting s/h rack to try and flush any dust or ****ty oil out,if new rack replace oil when changing rack ,just dont clamp fluid lines let the oil drain out],

A 30 day warranty from a wreckers is compulsory in my books, id be checking a 2nd handy andway for freeplay before i bought it anyway. Your looking at 200 bucks for a reco'd rack and about 80-100 from a wreckers, anymore and your getting ripped off...

.

If the leaks fixed and the 'ecsessive' play is the only issue i would look at the inner steering arms, they can dislodge after some heavy driving and can be dodgied up by being liquid nailed in - trust me its works and lasts :) take both tie rod ends off and gently move the rack side to side, another check is to have the car switched off then simply turn the wheel side to side, the last check would be to actually drive the car and turn the wheel side to side (centremetre or 2) and see if the car goes in a straight line or steers in the direction you pointed the wheel at

Ok for the inner steering arms, take the tierod ends andd and have a good ol yank ! if they come out there buggered (liquid nail job)

Youve got NO fluid?? must be some sort of big leak so musnt be hard to diagnose where its coming from, perhaps go to car lovers degrease and gurney the bastard down, then park it on your driveway with heaps of newspaper under it, insect in the morning and you should have your answer :)

also was the knocking in the rack while drving, while turning wheel with motor off or what??

A bit more info and youll be on your way in no time :p

ok i see i understand waht u mean now about the inner steering arms lol

well sorry i didnt explain propely
my mechanic told me to replace the steering pump n rack due to leaks n play
ive currently got the front of the car sitting on bricks in the garage with the wheels off and i found the leak so i disconected the long and short feed pipe and found that one of the hose clamps was fully loose so i tightened it right back up n i hope that fixs the leaks

while the pipes where off i moved the wheels from side to side to get all the old fluid out
then conected them back up n with the car off moving the steering wheel within a 5 cm movement i can hear a knocking before it moves the disks properly

nehow ill use the liquid nail n see how it goes

I think i conprehend what your saying (car on ground and everything toether turning wheel) then chances are its your tie rod ends. not a hard thing to yourself but again theres tricks!! its all in 'Nodg's archived howto's in the howto section of this site lol

hey mate i checked out the archived files before i posted but couldnt find anything relating to this. im probely blind lol
ok so the tie rod ends are off n the play i find is in the actual ball joint behing the bellow cover (rubber casing) on each side the ball moves within the actual ball joint 1 mm - 2mm max
surely i dont liqiud nail in there and there doesnt seem to any movement from the ball joint casing to the inner rack arm.
i was thinking ill just tighten up the tie rod really tight to push the ball into the joint... possibley it came loose over time???

You know the steel rod connected to the tierod end? if that pulled off the steering rack then you would need liquid nails!! in your case this sint a bad or hard fix. ill grab the howto soon, the only real trick is to count how many turns you make when taking the tierod ends off the inner steering arms. otherwise the wheel alignment will be out MAJORLY. Saying so chances are you will need a wheel alignment regardless but the car will still at least be drivable....

Ok i cant find it either...

So the tierod ends are off the strut assembly?? good! now get some white out or a pen cause you will need to make a mark on the top of the tierod end, then on the same place on the steering arm... To do the job you want to count how many turns it takes for it to fall off the steering arm then mark it.... when putting the new one on start twisting it on the inner steering arm where the old one fell off (if you know what i mean). Now once you have taken the old one off and you know where to start twisting the new one on (and how many turns to make) so do that make sure its all tight and get yourself a wheel alignment :)

just be careful as the cops are getting sneaky :p still there always one step behind the hoons. You just gotta be at the wrong place at the wrong time... the people your staying with will fill you in about it anyway.. Also if your chasing commodore parts while in recliffe, anything from vb-vt, send me a pm and ill give you my mates address (seriously has a wrecking yard in his house). He has shells, motors, seats, stereo gear, you name it :)
