Question. Should I shoot myself? I paid $750+ for a Sanden A/C compressor at Repco a few weeks ago, never really considering Ebay.

Today, after a fellow member here suggests Ebay to source an odometer gear, I wonder to myself, "Hmm, I wonder if I could have gotten an AC compressor on Ebay?"

The answer is apparently "Yes", and for about $500 LESS for the exact same compressor!!! ...assuming everything is what it appears to be and the guy is not a scammer.

That's the thing really, isn't it? - can you ever trust a more or less anonymous person selling something notoriously expensive at an unbelievably cheap price?

VN VP VR COMMODORE AIRCONDITIONING COMPRESSOR NEW
Sanden type with model TRS105 3202
Current bid: AU $280.00

Do you think this for real? I know AC compressors have traditionally been dear as poison, which is why I was so ready to accept the Repco price. And to be fair, they get it in within 24hrs, warranty it (I'm pretty sure) and you're guaranteed to get what you pay for at least. Is that what I paid $500 extra for?

It IS made in Japan, or so it says on the box, which would jack the price right up I suppose. I really don't know.

Okay, did more searching on Ebay...Also found NationWide Radiators selling a compressor (10 available) on Ebay for $475, free freight. I think I'm beginning to get the picture now.

Man, it's brutal out there in parts retailing, isn't it? I guess everyone's just tryin' to make a buck, 'taint nothin' personal.

This is true, but it's cheap on Ebay because there's risk to the buyer; no warranties, no returns, and definitely no backup. Sometimes aftermarket parts can be as good as, if not better than genuine. However, if it has "MADE IN TAIWAN" on it, you can be 90% certain that's not true.

I looked some more at radiators on Ebay.
They're half the price of Repco, and they have up to 2Yr warranty, but according to their pictures, they don't have the multiple horizontal ribs going down along the side tanks that the Repco radiator has, which is right near where my old radiator did in fact develop a huge long split. That's just going by the pics, assuming their accurate representations of the actual radiator.

Ordered a odometer drive gear on Ebay, though - still waiting for it arrive. Instrument shop refused to sell just a gear, insisted on $130 reco job. See how I go with the $13 gear first - if/when it arrives.

Your places like Repco have to pay for their building, power, staff, them to warrant the product, freight and the franchise fee, not to mention what they need to make as a profit that is why Repco are so dear. I worked for a company that had a sub-company which was like a Repco, but for trucks and when you see what they buy the items for and what they sell them for, it is stupid.

The only good thing with buying retail is that if anything goes wrong, you know where to find them. They are normally open to negotiation as well.

Cheers,

David

Ugh, margins. Or are we really talking about commissions?
Either way, failed to negotiate or even look suitably outraged.

At least they called me "Sir".

In auto shops, unless the thing they're selling is a whole car, there is no commission, just markup. "We buy it for x, sell it for x, making a net profit of x, so prices are not negotiable" Although there is a slight "out clause." most auto shops have a trade price and a retail price. The retail price is what they sell to the general public for, the trade is what they sell to other retailers for. Usually requires the use of someone's account to get the trade price.
