G'day....i have a steering problem and was wanting to know if it is possible to clean out the power steering.

When up to running temp, it sometimes can be hard turning tight left...right is ok.

the hose that returns fluid back into the resevoir split, the resevoir ran dry but i'm pretty sure the rack did'nt. Second hand part looked clean on the outside but maybe it had some gunk in it so maybe i could 'flush' it out?.....unless i have another problem

cheers tonto....

It could also be that you haven't bled the steering. When you fill it up, you turn the wheel lock to lock, back and forth. The oil will "foam up" for a while. As it settles down, you top it up.

Anyone else can jump in and correct me if I'm wrong, but to flush out the rack, undo the return line from the power steering pump and put it into a container. All the oil will drain, but don't run it like that for too long, or you'll damage the pump. The idea is to seal up the return line fitting on the pump, and pour fresh oil into the pump.

I don't know which one is the return line, but it's the same principle as the human circulation system; Arteries are pressure lines, veins are return lines. Sever an artery and it spurts. Cut a vein and it leaks slowly.

Cheers Mechknight, Lock to Lock for about 2 minutes seems to have rectified the problem
