The link isn't working properly, but I have seen the VH's Opel cousin with my own eyes. At first, when Holden designed the VB, they started with the idea of dropping Holden engines into an Opel Rekord body, and doing style changes where necessary. Turns out that they had to toughen, modify or redesign almost every part of that body to comply with their standards. What surprises me, is that there were some Opel Rekords getting around with Holden Blue sixes. I know this because a friend of mine is from Yorkshire. When he first emigrated to Australia, he looked under the bonnet of a VH Commodore and noticed that he'd seen this before. Some months later, I saw an actual Opel Rekord. Sure enough, under the bonnet was a 173, the shell and the dash were similar, but the butt-ugly front end and funny Camira style bumpers clued me on straight away. It honestly looks like an EA Falcon and a VH Commodore's love child. The Opel "lightning bolt" emblem was bigger than the grille badge on a VE!
I've been collecting a few links of late. Here's my list so far:

Note the Vauxhall Carlton on that site. Lotus had a go at hotting it up, and it is as sought after in the UK as a VN Group A is here. I managed to bump into one of the members of the UK Holden register in Australia; Essentially the biggest Holden car club in the British Isles. Their oldest car is a 1928 Chevy with a Holden body, right through to a rebadged Vauxhall VXR8 (better know as the HSV Club Sport in Australia.) While Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear likes to poke fun at anything Australian built, because it's Australian built, he can't deny he's having fun drifting in a VXR8 |
