Do you mean test and change, or just change? I changed my fan sensor, which is right beside it on the manifold. It will have a single wire connector on it. (Word of warning: do this when the engine is stone cold. Tried to change mine while the engine was still warm, and got a minor second degree burn for my trouble!) It should be a simple matter of undoing a nut, which is part of the brass shaft that is the sensor. There may also be a copper or stainless steel washer behind the nut head. When you put the new one in, seal it with thread tape, and either get a new one of these, or make sure the old one is tight.
You will find this sensor at the back of the engine, right behind the R/H/R part of the intake manifold. More or less, very close to where the thermostat housing is. Which of course, on a Series 1 is at the end of a very long stainless steel pipe. You could probably make quick work of it with a tube socket, but I forget just how much clearance it allows back there |

Ok guys, changed it over and guess what!!! just my luck, im still not getting a reading from my temperature gauge, any other ideas about what it could be??? Have had the cluster looked at and apparently there is nothing wrong with it at all its something in my car. am thinking about putting the cluster out of the old vn in just to make sure, but if it still doesnt work throw some ideas at me!!!! |

Step 1; Just so you can rule it out, take out the sensor, and put it in some hot water, then measure the resistance. Should be x at cold, then gets closer to zero the hotter it gets. Next, test resistance on the wire itself. Will look it up in the manual if you can't find it yourself. But your idea of changing the cluster is a good one. If you know for sure the one in the other cluster works. This will at least tell you for sure it's the car harness and not the gauge. Diagnosing anything is eliminating the bloody obvious first, then getting into the harder things; stuff you might not see |

Next step is to look for any damage to the wire that connects to the sensor. If that's not it, then you only have one other culprit; the gauge itself. |
