hey guys, my rack end on the drivers side seems loose in the power steering rack. has anyone ever had to change one of these? if so how do i go about it? i know its got something to do with bending back a lock washer to get the old ones out but i dont like the idea of 'bendng' anything since the rack is made of an alloy. any help would be great.

Ok have not done this myself but reading through the manual it seems like a fairly straight forward procedure. Have you got a manual?? Watch this video as it is pretty much the same procedure except it doesn't have the lock washer on the vehicle in the video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MJOtr-vj6M If you do not have a manual I would suggest going and purchasing a Gregory's manual or I can take you through it step by step. Let us know if you have any drama's. Cheers Wayne |
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

Another quick note, if you have to remove any pieces of the steering shaft, it's almost a certainty you'll need a wheel alignment. And probably stating the blindingly obvious when I say put a big drain pan under it, beacause it will make a mess. When reassembled, fill up the resevoir and let it idle. The power steering fluid will appear to "foam up;" don't panic, it's just air in the oil. Rock the steering lock to lock, topping it up as you go. If you don't, one or the other side of the steering will feel heavy and/or unresponsive. |

sweet vid. looks pretty simple. wish i had that special tool tho. hammer and a spanner should do it. by the looks of if i wont have to take the rack off so i wont need to re-bleed the system. wheel alignment wont be a problem, im an apprentice mechanic so i do alot of that ****.. |

Make sure you turn the steering all the way to the side you are wanting to remove. It also states in the manual that there are provisions for a spanner on the rack side as well and rack side should be supported with correct spanner whilst undoing the tie rod. |

I've replaced those in car. Wasn't my favourite job, but not that bad. I didn't need to get too brutal at all. Recall using hammer and punch/chisel/screwdriver to bend back the locking tabs of the big washer. There are two flats on the rack end to get a spanner/shifter onto. I don't recall supporting the rack itself while I did that...oops...seems obvious thing to do now. Oh well, the twisting didn't appear to cause damage. |

too easy. lock washers can be a bit of a bitch to get to if you replace on car. but once u bend them back the rack end is easily unscrewable (sit a spanner on it and kick the spanner). i had a new set of tie-rod ends too so i left the old ones locked onto the old rack ends and removed the complete unit from the car. since my new rack ends had a longer tie-rod thread compaired with the old ones i used the old unit as a guide and set up my new rack end/tie-rod end to the same length. apply some strong thread locker and sit your new locking washer over the tread. screw in. make sure your lock washer went into the tabs on the cylinder end. when u have it tight bend your lock washers onto your flats ( i used a hammer and punch). put your tie-rod end into your hub and tighten. get wheel alignment. both my rack-end knuckles had about 2mm play in them. my tie-rods ends were also quite loose but not terrible. one of my lock washers had broken off its inner locking tabs and the knuckle was quite easy to undo, so it was a good thing i did this cause if that let go while i was driving id be fairly ****ed. car is a pleasure to drive now. 100% improvement on handling and no more nasty knock. |
