Hey guys and gals, got a mate with a VE 6Lt and he wants to drop it into the VN. Can anyone tell us whats involved in doing this? It's out of an ss, and has an auto hanging off the back at the moment, but he's looking to ditch that and switch to the 6spd manual. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanx!

For a start, you're going to need an auto sparky to modify the VN harness to take a VE's engine management computer. Front engine mounts won't be a problem, but make sure you get the rear transmission crossmember; there's a good chance it's different to that in a VN SS. If your VN isn't already a V8, go round up a V8 K-frame (main parts of the front crossmember) Uprating to V8 springs would only be necessary for handling purposes, as the all alloy 6 litre allegedy weighs about the same as an Ecotec VT V6.

As for driveline, if the clutch is hydraulic, get the clutch cylinder and install that, and try to find out if the diff ratios match. if they don't, your speedo may be out. Also, you may need some "rewiring" to make the speedo take a feed from the VE's transmission; they aren't cable driven, they're electronic

Thanks guys, I think he's managed to get his hands on a step by step guide to doing it, now it's just a matter of getting the money and custom parts together. lol. I dare say he will put pic's up here when it's done.

Most of it's a Meccano set to put together, the only hard part is the wiring to accomodate the ECM

So are you using the entire driveline, or just the engine and gearbox? I only say this as I'm wondering as to whether you'd use the IRS diff that's standard equipment on a VE. If that looks like an expensive "conversion" to you, I have a suggestion; The VZ one tonners have a diff that (at least from the outside) looks identical to that in a VN sedan, except for the leaf spring mounts, instead of the coils and 5 link rear end. All VY/VZ well body utes, sedans and wagons had IRS rear ends, which is why I suspect the one tonners might be a good candidate for a diff if you need a standard VN rear end. Study a VQ Statesman rear end (just in case you decide you want the IRS rear end), and ask what's the difference (internally) between a VN diff and a VY/Z one tonner diff. Externally, they look very similar.
