Depends on the ratio that you're after. The VL turbo had an LSD, but from memory it was a 3.45 ratio diff (VN has a 3.08 ratio as far as I can remember). It was actually an option on the entire VN range (executive, berlina, calais, S), I think it was standard on the VNSS.
Though I do believe that any live axle LSD from a VL to a VR will bolt up (can someone confirm this for me?). In all honesty, go to a wreckers (if there is one in Canberra) and ask for an LSD for a VN. The only problem is that it may be worn. If you've got the cash, go and get one brand new from a Diff shop, hell...Holden may even still have them. |

Hey, I know all about budgets. I've got a list of things that I want to do to my car (total cost of about $9000), and I earn SFA a week (uni student working a casual job...).
In all honesty, unless you've got the gear to rebuild the diff yourself, I'd say save the extra pennies and get a new one and get them to fit it, that way it lines up and shouldn't whine and you know that the clutch inside will be nice and tight.
The half axles should fit the LSD no worries, but I'd check with someone else just be sure. |

| Limited Slip Differential: Basically it's got a clutch mechanism inside the diff housing that will only allow one wheel to spin for a little bit before it locks up and drives both wheels. Awesome for traction, but as with all Diff mods there's arguments for and against. |

| Why should anyone get abused for asking a legit question? There's only two ways to learn things, by making mistakes and by asking questions. If you were to ask a really blonde question ("where does the engine oil go in?", and yes I did get asked that one day by a friend at uni) then I'd probably tell you that you should just buy a pushbike. |

While that's one method of working out if you've got an LSD, it's not really reliable. I have an open diff and can double-leg it if I boot it hard enough.
The only way to know for certain if you have an LSD is to jack the rear of the car off the ground and spin one of the wheels by hand. If the other wheel spins the same way you're looking at an LSD, if it spins the opposite way you're playing with an open diff.
As for markings, some of the VN's came with diffs which had a 'high-performance' tag on them, but it didn't always mean they were an LSD. |

| Me and my mate went and were doing some burnouts...hes got an S15 and ive got my VN commo(sorry MR rich 'I can afford $30,000 for my first car'). I no that hes got sh*t loads more power than me, but because he had an LSD, he really put me to shame doing doughnuts. There he was whiping the tail around, whist i was just going round and round in circles spinning the one wheel. It felt horrible compared to him. Devastating even. I left with my head down in shame. So now, i want an LSD. I dont want a spool because my mates have got em and the wheels wont smoke up. Not to mention they will munch up the splines on the axles(not that burnouts themselfs wont do damage and ruin the engine, diff, tranny, etc). I dont do burnouts that often but i do occasionally. If i buy a second hand one from the wreckers, will it be safe to drive and do burnouts occassionally? Is it worth it? I no a new or reco is the best...but $$$$$ is always a problem. |

First up: If you're doing circle work on public roads, or in public areas you SHOULD hang your head in shame, not because you were beaten, but because you'd be a tool if you had done it. If it's private property then read on...
If you plan on doing burnouts don't bother with the VN LSD. They die really quickly if you're doing circle work, the cones die. KAAZ make really solid LSDs for the VN, and they would be my pick for an LSD for the VN. The stock one is okay for pottering around town, and stuff like that, but anything more 'abusive' than that and they pack up.
Glad to hear that you don't want to put in a spool, as you mentioned they tend to eat bits of the drive train. Also, they are illegal in some (if not all states), and it's really easy to get busted for them. A good quality LSD is safer and less damaging to the drive line of the car. |

| KAAZ make really good quality LSDs (amongst other things), the clutch packs in the Holden LSD are really quick to wear, and when they do you might as well have an open diff. The KAAZ ones have a reputation as being some of the best LSDs you can pick up. They are a US based company, but talk to any good performance shop and they should be able to help you out. |
