wats cracken guys? Ive been into cars since i could walk and the only thing i didnt really learn about was the audio side of things. All ive got in my car is the stocko tape deck and the two piece of **** dash speakers...ive had enough of the static, tapes and lack of sound. I WANT AN UPGRADE!!!!
What should i do? i want to get front speakers, rear 6x9s, amp and sub. What do i get? i was thinking of JAYCAR for the speakers and AMP and poineer for the Head unit and SUB and i want to make my own box. What do ya think?
Also, i realise that i might have to start selling my sp*rm if i paid someone to install it all? HOW DO I DO IT MYSELF??!?!?!?
Im worried bout all the wiring the most(fuses, wiring, cables, etc...) Im really not good with electricity.
(ITS THE SPEAKERS IM REALLY WORRIED BOUT coz then you have to start cutting things.)
HELP...

If you're going to use subs, don't use 6x9's simple as that. Get a good set of 6.5" 3-way coaxials for the rear. For the front, a set of door pods will allow you to drop in 6.5" speakers in the front too, or if you're like me, I just went with 4" splits in the dash, that way I didn't have to cut anything.
Jaycar Response amps/subs are medium SQ for a budget price, they will be a huge improvment over what you've got at the moment.
Building your own box for the sub means that you'll need to know the specs for the sub, otherwise you'll end up with a box the wrong size and it's going to sound sh1t.
What are you looking for in a h/u? Pioneer do some good ones, JVC do some good ones (and have the option of a 12 disc mp3 stacker).
The most important thing to do when doing a sound installation is to set a budget and stick to it. Let us know how much you want to spend and then I (or someone else) can recommend what to get.

I want to spend bout $600-$800 on the whole lot.(including wires, etc...) For the head unit, there is a pioneer(DEH-P5750MP) one on eBay for $220 and it looks pretty good.(i can get my mate to install it)
Why not 6x9s? And, it might be a stupid question, but what is the difference between coaxials, component and splits???(im new to car audio).
I dont want the best of the best becasue i cant afford it and i dont think i will need it, however, i do want a good system that can pump when i want it to, so i think a budget, medium SQ is what i need. |

You'll be hard pressed to put together everything you want with only $800. It's just not going to be enough not for mid SQ anyway.
You might be able to do the h/u amp and 4 speakers for that. But even that will be pushing it. I thought that I'd be able to get all the gear that I wanted for about $1000...turns out that I spent about $500 just on the h/u and stacker (JVC), another $200 went on the front 4" splits, and the subs are going to cost me $150 EACH. Add to that the fact that I've only got one of my amps so far and each one of them is going to cost me $500... Then there's cables, fuses, and all the other goodies to go with it.
6x9's are okay for when you don't have any subs, but they do sound fairly dodgy. Because of the shape of the cone, they tend to flex a little more than a round cone, and as such they 'colour' the sound a little bit, it's normally not a big problem if they are just getting run from the h/u and there are no subs in the car. As soon as you add a sub and/or an amp for the sound stage speakers you should get away from 6x9's.
Component and splits are the same thing, they have physically separate speakers. A good example is what I have in the front: http://www.fusioncaraudio.com/products.php?action=view&product_id=53
Coaxial speakers have all the cones in the same housing so there is only one speaker to mount: http://www.fusioncaraudio.com/products.php?action=view&product_id=57
Generally splits are used in the front, so that the tweeters can be mounted up nice and high to give a good sound stage, in the rear this is less important so coaxial speakers in the parcel shelf would be okay. |
