Howdy groovers, new to this site so gday all. looking for some help with an injector problem and figured you guys would be the ones to ask???? I do not own a vn but did have a vq stato for some time and became very attatched to my injected 8 so much so that i kept it and shoved it into my 69 hk,anyway to get to the point i am having trouble with my injectors overfueling (pulsing too fast) and causing the engine to run extremely rich at low revs (under 3500rpm)this does make for great fun once the 3500 is reached and things start to even out and get sideways but will not do as the lack of power down low and the fouled plugs and grey smoke really suck, I have tested every component of the electrical system and found no fault, all i can gather is the auto computer is not happy to run with the old school g,box. Running injected 308(not 304) with manualised p/glide and auto computer from vq with updated memcal,PLEASE HELP

Welcome to the site, sounds like a mad car you're running, any pics of it?
First up, there's no difference between the auto and the manual computer in the VN, it's no an issue there (the auto was mechanically controlled, not electrically so the ecu have to worry about it). The 'updated' memcal may cause you a few issues though, how does the car run once a 'stock' memcal is inserted?
Since it's running mad rich I'd say that you should start by checking your Oxygen sensor (sorry, I've got no idea where it is on the V8), on the V6 it's on the passengers exhaust manifold.
Also, for the injectors to overfuel the injectors would be pulsing too slowly, the slower the pulse the longer they are open for the more fuel goes through.
Other things to check would be: Fuel pressure (if it's too high it can overfuel) Injectors (are they closing properly or continuing to leak into the cylinder all the time?)
First things first, try a stock memcal...knowing what goes into modifying a memcal, I can tell you it's really easy to overfuel an engine. |

Hey mouce, your a gun, can you tell me whehter the Vn Series 2 had different injectors to the VS V6 n/a?
The part numbers for the VS V6 ones are Bosch:0280 150 973 Holden: 24503226
Would these fit the VN series 2, cos i need new ones as you know, or i have to get mine cleaned, but i'd prefer new ones! |

Physically they should fit fine, get on the Bosch website and check out the flow-rate for the injectors, so long as they are not a lower flow-rate than the ones on the VN it should be okay. Of course you're not going to want to have them if they are a much LARGER flow-rate, try to make sure they are around the same figure and you shouldn't have too many problems.
There's no reason you can't get 'new' ones for a VN though is there? |

Yeah i can get new ones, but from motortraders they are $106.50 each...
So that makes it over $600 for the injectors! And i should be able to get all 6 of the VS ones for under $100...
Thought i'd ask... |

Hey mouce, i checked out the bosch website, and they didnt have the flow rates that i could find, and the part numbers were different. The VN-VR were the same tho, so it could be to do with the ecotec... Any other ideas?? Thanks mate |

Okay, from what I've been able to work out the standard VN-VR injectors are a 17lb injector, the ones on the ecotec look like they might be about 22lb. So while they would fit, you'd end up using a tad more fuel (but you would get more power from it). Upgrading the injectors normally means a retune of the memcal though, and unless you feel like splashing out on the cost of a dyno tune...you get the idea.
Interesting to see that the S1 and the S2 had different injectors. Didn't know that one.
You should be able to get genuine Bosch injectors for less than $100. Yeah, they are damn expensive, but there's not a lot that you can do about that.
To be honest, I really recommend that you get your ones cleaned and spray pattern tested. Call around a few EFI and fuel system specialists, find out who can do it and get a few quotes. It should work out to be a HELL of a lot cheaper than new injectors.
Really the only times that injectors need to be replaced is a) when they stop opening and closing and, b) if they become damaged internally.
Before splashing out and getting 6 nice shiny new injectors, an ultrasonic clean should make a big difference if they are just dirty. If they are damaged then yeah...you'll need new ones.
A clean will work most of the time, and saves you big bucks. That said, if you want to throw the VS ones in there, there's nothing to physically stop you, but you might find that your car is a bit thirstier than it's meant to be. |
